I am retiring from the hobby when I complete my want list so I guess it really doesn't affect me either way, but I don't know...wouldn't less cards mean they are less collectible? Think about it - if you have a rookie card that is serial numbered to 500, would you part with it easily?
If all 500 copies of that card are in the hands of collectors, the odds of a collector parting with it are lower than if it was serial numbered to 999.
There are many collectors who don't use BV any more and I cannot afford to buy or trade for key cards at secondary market value. Some of the asking prices are insane as it is. Rookies limited to 500 would command ridiculous amounts.
If you are thinking rookies should be lower because that would make them more valuable, I think that is the wrong way to look at the hobby. I collect because it is fun. Book values are lower because it is supposed to be a hobby, not a profit-making venture. For example, I have many SP Authentic rookies of star players like Malkin, Tavares, Datsyuk, Giroux, etc...if I had to buy those on the secondary market, I would never afford them. If I went by secondary market asking prices, I wouldn't have much of a collection.
I feel extremely fortunate to have the collection I have, given my financial situation. I live about three hours away from the nearest 'local' hobby shop, which puts me at a disadvantage when it comes to buying products and freshening up my traders.
If all rookie cards were limited to 500 copies as you would like them to be (or even lower than 500), I have a feeling that it would turn many people off from collecting. If that happened (and I was still a collector), I would be royally ticked because it would be harder to acquire them.

SP Authentic is the only set I collect, and they are difficult to acquire as it is. Most of the good ones, as I said, have high book/sale value now (Crosby/Ovechkin etc.). If they went down to 500 copies, forget it - I wouldn't collect them because I don't have the inventory or disposable income to acquire them.
I think a lot of people are in that situation, really. That's why I think reducing the number of copies would be a bad idea.

I would agree with this.
Being numbered out of 999 is a big part of what makes the set as popular as it is. It's limited, but not too limited. It's a huge upgrade on something like Black Diamond or UD Series 1, but not like going to The Cup or Ultimate. The set is actually something that people can build, without pumping thousands of dollars into it.
You cut the production in half, you're going to drive up the prices on the top tier players.... making the sets unbuildable for those of us without the wallet depth to keep up.
Of course, raising the sale values of the top tier guys probably has the opposite effect on the bottom tier of players. Few people bothering with building the set, and nobody going to grab common RCs as "investments". Instead of that player you never heard of being the last one you need for a set..... it would become the throw away card that 75% of the Cup ARPs are.

valid points. I really like the reasoning behind how people can still put the set together /999 without breaking the bank. I may be wrong with me want of /500 rookies. How much does everyone think Mackinnon will sell for 200-300?

McKinnon's SP Authentic rookie will probably book in the $300 - $350 area I figure.
He's very dynamic player, there's no doubt.
In terms of selling, I don't think he will be better than better than Gretzky, Crosby, etc. so if I am buying his card I think $175 - $200 is reasonable.
Of course, values will skyrocket when the set is finally released. I tend to wait a while after release to let the values settle before acquiring a card.
Only time will tell if I am correct or way off base LOL

$200 will likely be the selling point, maybe $225. Will likely book around $400

At first, yes.
Again, as time goes by, sale and book values will settle a bit lower. I feel like the beginning values are based on hype, expectation, and what the player has done so far.
If MacKinnon burst on the scene and got 82 points in 82 games, sure. He did not (63 points in 82 games).
People have been raving about this guy the same way as they did Crosby. I would never go that far. That's why I feel that a possible value of $400 is a bit of a reach. If this is the value, I will not be paying that much. I try to buy at one-third BV whenever possible, or try to do a cards + cash deal simply because I don't have the inventory or resources to do so
