Question regarding early '70s Topps Basketball

Hello. Not really a basketball collector, but looking to pick up some early '70s stuff from when I collected it as a kid. Perusing ebay I noticed that a couple of the Jerry West cards showed him in posed shots, with a Laker jersey on but "West" showing on the front, as opposed to "Lakers" or "Los Angeles". Was wondering if there is a story there. Did they wear their jerseys backwards during shoots due to a licensing issue? Just curious and thought I would see if anyone had any info on it. Thanks.
I collect: Kurri, '70s Kelloggs, Topps/OPC hockey /90 and earlier, selected '90s hockey insert sets, '70s football, and baseball with focus on Dynasty A's and completing sets.

Yes, that was pretty much it.

    Pwaldo: Yes, exactly.

Gatorboymike: Thanks, guess that makes sense. Can you imagine the photog telling Jerry to put his jersey on backwards.
