I would highly doubt that a company would intentionally make a high end rookie a redemption (or really, any card). Why torpedo the hopes of your product being a good seller?

Regardless of being the top rookie or not, they are all numbered to 999 copies. Crosby has 999, just like Jeff Hoggan has 999.

Conspiracy theories abound with this SPA release....

So after seeing proof that MacKinnon IS a redemption, does this really surprise you? This is Upper Deck we are talking about. They haven't done anything rational since the before 2005-06.

Please, provide me with a reason as to how this would help UD.

Well, I don't know the thought process on it, or what they were smoking when they made that decision. Maybe they are hoping that the redemption will push the product to sell well so that the redemptions don't lay around the factory floor? I have NO idea.

Trust me, I think ANY redemption is a bonehead idea. Period.

So, with that in mind, would it be better to not have a MacKinnon SPA Auto RC if it could not be produced in time for release?

What Upper Deck needs to do is make sure players sign earlier.

To answer your question, I think if the MacKinnon was not an FWA many collectors would be angry the other way.

For me personally, I don't give a hang if an SP Authentic RC is signed or not. That's why I don't think redemptions are necessary.

They can't hold a gun to the player's head and make him get the cards back in time. I highly doubt UD is holding his signed cards back on purpose because that does not help the set in any way. A card not being live will never help push a product but please share with us what you are smoking.

I do find it odd that this is the first Mackinnon redemption from any product (except artifacts but that doesn't count). He had live hard signed Dominion autos in Anthology and live sticker autos in every other product thats come out all season, you mean to tell me that UD has pushed back SPA how many times now and for how long and still doesn't have a hard signed auto of Mackinnon? Panini had no problem getting Nate to sign.

On the plus side though this could be big in the long run for Mackinnons future watch autos. Depending on how much of this gets broke, 3-5 years from now a Mackinnon could be quite hard to find. What if only 1-200 get redeemed? If you want one a few years down the road you can't bust wax trying to pull one as it will be expired so your only chance of one will have to buy one off the secondary market. Every other future watch (or close to every other) will be plentiful in the full /999 print run available both on the secondary market and still sitting in wax, Mackinnon will not be out in the full print run as I highly doubt all 999 will be redeemed so really Mackinnon could have potential to be worth more down the road depending on how many get redeemed. 5 years from now I can bust an 05/06 and try for a Crosby, 5 years from now I won't be able to bust 13/14 for a Mackinnon because it will be an expired worthless decoy card. There will be less Mackinnons on the market now because of the redemption so it may not be a bad idea to pick one up and hope the kid has a solid career and continues to get better.

    First, I smoke nothing.

Second, I'll be honest with you...with the way Upper Deck has been operating, I put NOTHING past them. Why is it that Panini got autographs from him months ago and UD still has none till now?

It just came to me that yes in fact UD has had hard signed Mackinnon autos already in SP Game Used MONTHS AGO!

How is that Nate has signed hard signed in SPGU, Twice for Panini with his Dominon cards and Playbook, but now all of a sudden for SPA he can't sign in time despite it being pushed back at least 3 times? I'm sorry but I do find it a bit odd now.

Somehow, I think this was purposely done.

    I don't like it.

MattDMC just provided proof that hard-signed MacKinnons existed in Upper Deck products before SP Authentic. Still don't think this was purposely done?
