    Mario Lemieux RC

Just wondering what is the best way to tell a Mario OPC #9 rookie card from the reprint.

    Thanks

    Saw this on another site...

“The biggest thing to watch for on the Lemieux RC is the Penguins logo in the top right corner. Under magnification, the logo should have solid black shading and good colour seperation. If the black shading or colour borders are dotted or bleed together you are probably looking at a counterfeit. Another thing to look at on the Lemieux RC are the edges on the front of the card. If you notice the maroon colour from the back of the card showing some blend into the white edges on the front of the card, again red flags should go up. Be careful when buying or trading for a Lemieux RC as there are many variations of reprints out there.”

Good advice. But you should educate yourself and be able to make your own judgement. The info Rich provided is key in determining if it's authentic or not. If the card is authentic it was printed with OPC printing plates and will have those sharp black border lines. Reprints (fakes, counterfeits, etc.) were printed with bubble jets that print bubbly lines. You can determine if any OPC rc is authentic with a 600dpi high-resolution scan.

If i did that then I would have missed out on this deal.

Thanks all for the info. Had asked the question before going to look at a near complete set at a thrift store that my mother works at. Once i seen the set it all looked good even the box they came in is aged. Cards all looked aged with a bit of bowing some even have the gum residue on them.
Bought the set and will be looking for the 8 cards it was missing.

Here is a random sample of the condition.

    and Mario

So i have a new question. Is there any safe way to take the gum residue off?

Gum residue is an Oily-Waxy stain. The oils in the guar gum will not come out, that is why these look so nasty when you see them on a card back.

Nothing can be done other than selling the card at the 50% reduced rate. It's that serious - 50% off any value. The rest of the card can be perfect, but a Gum-stain is a bonafide 50%er in reduction, unless you can find a sucker who thinks otherwise..

You mentioned even the box it came in. Were the cards in packs or were they in the sheets or the original box from 1985-86? What did you pay for all of the cards?

    Thanks.

They were in a white 500 count trading card box. With wadded up paper to fill the box to keep the cards upright. Not in packs and the gum was long gone.

    Cost me 37.50 for them.

What a great deal. I hope that you locate more. I am trying to collect the 1970's myself at this point. If they had any of that in the condition you got these in, I would be interested.
