Agreed. I collected heavily through the 00-01 releases and got a forced break after getting laid off, then rejoined the fray in earnest in 05-06 like many others did.
There are quite a few HTF and/or popular issues and it may be folly to try to list them, but here are a few from my perspective. Bear in mind that some of these may be just because I live in the hobby desert that is Phoenix, AZ:
94-95: Score Platinum, Dream Team, Team Canada; Stadium Club First Day Issue
95-96: Finest Gold, Gold Refractors; Topps Mystery Finest Refractors
96-97: BAP Link to History Autos (stars); Black Diamond Gold (Triple <>), Run for the Cup; Flair Blue Ice (stars); Leaf Preferred Gold Press Proof; Select Certified Mirror Gold (and Mirror Blue/Red to a certain extent); SP Inside Info Gold; UD Game Jerseys; UD Ice Stanley Cup Foundations die-cut parallel (Dynasty); Zenith Champion Salute (parallel with real diamond chip)
97-98: BAP Prismatic die-cut Auto /100 (stars); Black Diamond Quads; Donruss Canadian Ice Stanley Cup Scrapbook AU (cards 31-33); Donruss Priority Stamp of Approval /100; Donruss Preferred Precious Metals; Pinnacle Epix Moment Emerald (and some other Epix); Pinnacle Certified Mirror Gold (stars); Totally Certified Platinum Gold; SPx Grand Finale parallel; Zenith Z-Gold /100
Getting sleepy just typing this...anyway, that's my take on a few of those years, FWIW.

To say that every card prior to 94 has no value and is kindling for a fire is overlooking a few things and could end up burning some majorly SP'd error cards from sets like 90/91 Pro Set that still sell for over $100.

There are a ton of resources and articles out there to do your homework. High dollar cards from 90/91 to 93/94 are very rare but they are out there. Diamonds in the rough.

95-96 Zenith Z-team sells very well now, 97-98 Totally Certified Mirror Platinums /25 can fetch insane prices with right players on the cards.
Anything with Felix Potvin from any rarer parallels from end of 90's is like a goldmine!

Many inserts and parallels from the mid-late 90s are in fact worth some good money. There were less sets back then so an insert #'d to 3000 or a parellel #'d to 500 are actually more rare than a parellel #'d to 25 today. Let's pick one player, like Nicklas Lidstrom for example. A Lidstrom parallel #'d to 25 today can sell for $10. A Lidstrom parallel #'d to 100+ from the 90s can sell for $30. The reasoning is there are 20+ sets produced each year now with a Lidstrom #'d to 25. There may have been 2 sets in the 90's with Lidstrom parallels, making it much rarer in retrospect.
I am no expert either, but there are some extremely rare inserts even in the early 90s stuff that sell very well. The introduction of jersey or memorabilia cards in the late 90s also sell for a pretty penny. Donruss preferred Precious Metals wheres cards had one gram of silver, gold, platinum for example command a huge dollar now-a-days. Cards you just do not see anymore.
99% of the time though when people say they have 90's cards it is early 90s Upper Deck and proset etc and it is not worth it to even look through the cards.Master List: Hidden Content

Most the early 90s is junk (obvious exceptions like the Stanley Cup Hologram). Is there some value in Brodeur RCs ? A couple of bucks. Same with Jagr, Lindros, etc.
The big money from the 90s is the mid-late. Short Printed Parallels. I've got a $75 bill for anyone that can get me a '98 Ranford MVP Superscript /25. Stuff like that.

1996-97 Black Diamond Triple Diamonds will always sell. Just sold a Roy for $25 not going to make you rich, but has some value. On that note the Triple Diamond Gold from 1996-97 were short printed to 50 and I have been buying those lately and they can for about $20-100 depending on the player. The run for the Cup from Black Diamond that year are /100 and go for $100+ on a good day.
So to sum that paragraph...
1996-97 Black Diamond Triple Diamond, Gold Triple Diamond, and Run for the Cup are worth good money.

I would say not to overlook the 1992 Bowman Gold Foil SP's. I've picked up a few Gretzky's lately really cheap - a BV of $20 and I think I've paid maybe $12 dlvd total for three of them in the past month.
As someone who is in a very similar position as you are about the mid-to-late 90's hockey card market, I would agree with just about everything that's been posted so far. Anything that was short-printed or low-numbered, like /100 or less (or even some of the /500 & /1000 stuff) is well worth looking out for. I had my sights set on a 2-box lot of 96-97 SPx Hockey the other day and the price just blew up in the last 2 minutes of bidding and went way out of my price range.

Lets not forget cards like:
- Starquest Gold /100
- Hart Hopefuls Gold /100
And my person favorite ...... Topps Mystery Finest Gold Refractors:

Working on the set above. Only have Jagr and Koivu scanned, but I paid more than $50 for my Gretzky, in the $30 - $40 range for my Brodeur / Bure / Jagr ( im sure Roy will be in this range too ) ...... in the $20s for guys like Selanne / Hasek ... and the rest $10 - $15.
