A Crosby white whale I needed for my set is caught and now in hand...Is it legit?

Collecting everything from the 07-08 Ultra set is becoming impossible to find especially the Uniformity Patches /25. There is 99 in the set and I have about 79/99 of them and over 100(including doubles/triples) total of the 2475 made. Where are the rest I need? Anyway, I just got the Crosby Patch. Is it legit? It looks like a tag. I saw other ones on ebay. Anyone have any info on it?

Honestly I have no clue but If I would ask this question why would UD Put Tags in a lower end product like Ultra for patches? I find it strange. I would have stayed away from it.

I did a quick search of ebay and the only Ultra Uniformity Patches that had tags in them were Crosby. Every other player had a patch. There were 2 of those Crosbys. Sid would have been the player to "fake" a tag as a patch the most popular and best selling. If I was putting money down I would say its fake. Again I have ZERO Proof to back this up though.

I'll be the counter-point to that previous comment and ask: why would someone fake a patch in a low-end product such as Ultra?

I do know I've seen some rather nice patches from 07-08 Ultra (which I'm sure the OP can vouch for, being an avid collector of the set). I feel like I MAY have seen a tag or two for other players in this patch set, but can't say for sure.

    I'd say it's real.

I would say legit. There were several copies of the Crosby that hit ebay back near release that featured the same type of tag.

I say legit as well, I know that UD used tags on a few different players in that set. However, the Ultra Patches from that year have always sold well so a fake is definitely not out of question as there is demand for the set and especially unique swatches.

Thanks for the responses. I will show some of my better patches, well that appear to be more then a simple 1-2-3 color patch. My Ovechkin looks like it's some kind of tag too.. It is just so hard to find patches of anyone in this set. I guess most people PC'd then..001.jpg

I'm a little late to the party on this one but here's my two cents worth and I'll apologize in advance for all the pics.

Ovechkin did in fact have (at least) a couple of cards with tags including the OP's:

They more or less resemble a Cutting Edge Sports tag from his 05-06 gamer:

The seller that has the other 2 tags listed on eBay claims that because they're tags with Steve Latin's name on them that they're from Crosby's rookie season. That would be correct and, I believe, the only season they could be from if they are in fact from a game worn Crosby jersey, as Latin was fired after the 2005-06 season. However, none of the 7 tags I can find from photo matched/authentic game worn jerseys from his rookie season look anything like either of the tags on eBay or the one on the OP's card.

Given that Recchi's is the same, it seems unlikely there were different types of tags from that season so while it certainly appears that the tag on the OP's card is from the same tag as the other two on eBay, I don't know where that tag came from. I can't find a Pens jersey from any year that has that kind of a tag on it. Anybody have any ideas?

Now, assuming ignorance hasn't gotten the better of me (which given that I've been awake for 21 hours is entirely possible so please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong), I guess I'm still not sure what this post proves, if anything, other than I have way too much time on my hands and that I need to go to bed!

Awesome post. That's more research then I could have ever done. I know it doesn't solve anything, but all the pics are perfect for puzzling the mind. Very interesting to look at...
