    Complete Sets

Hello, folks. Like I mentioned when I introduced myself on the "Meet & Greet" forum, I started collecting sports card back in the mid-70's (heavily) and kind of tapered off until I completely quit in the mid 90's. I haven't paid attention to the the hobby at all in the last 10+ years. Got a few questions for you folks...

    1. Do people still care about complete sets, or is the rage getting autographed or game-worn jersey cards? The jersey cards were starting to get popular when I quit.

    2. What's the "average" price for a pack of cards now? On that note, how many major companies are distributing cards?

I know, those questions will require more than a one word answer, but I figure this is the place to get the answers! Thanks for your time!

Yes there are still set collectors. This site has a bunch of them. Different collectors though always aim for different things.

$3 for most, but packs can range anywhere between $2 and $200

Game-used and autos are definitely all the rage.

Topps and Upper Deck are the only two companies licensed to produce baseball cards. You'll see the Bowman name which is a Topps brand, and the Fleer name (which is an Upper Deck brand after the bankruptcy).

What you probably know as Donruss produces football cards and includes the Score, Playoff, and Leaf brands. Topps and Upper Deck also produce football cards. PressPass and Sage produce football cards emphasizing NFL rookies.

Upper Deck just became the only licensed company for hockey cards.

PressPass, Topps and Upper Deck produce basketball cards.

I think you can still get a pack for a $1 (Bazooka?) anywhere up to hundreds for a "pack" of the most high-end products (Exquisite, for example). Average is probably $8-10.

No, Josh. I didn't know any of that! Fleer went bankrupt? Wow! I need to print this thread out just so I can learn the names. PressPass & Sage are new to me, and I remember Bowman.

Press Pass and Sage are popular because they usually put out the first cards of NFL and NBA rookies each season.

My son and I care about completing sets. Its kinda tough since we're on a tight budget but we still have fun. We also enjoy getting the autographed cards, GU (game-used) cards and all the other insert cards. I'm not a player collector but my son is. He is an Eric Gagne collector besides being a set collector. I do try and help him get Gagne cards when I can. So we have pretty much the best of both worlds.

So you're not one of the "$200 pack" buyers, eh? I know I wouldn't be, even if I could afford it. I've got so much catching up to do.

    My response, hope this helps

I Collect certain sets, mostly what catches my eye and that I have the money for. There are some beautiful sets out there. You can get them fairly cheap on ebay if you wanted because people search for the Autos or GU and think the rest is junk. There mistake, imo.

Some colletors myself included have moved away from GU cards unless it is totally uinique (such as a Patch, Multi colored or having some other unique characteristic). Now some traders/collectors also only collect autos on the card not stickers.

Packs run from $1(Super low end) to $500(Super High End). But the majority of packs I buy run from $3 to $12. I can't go higher and justify it. Hope this helps.

Thanks again, gang. Out of curiosity, what kind of packs go for $500?
