Question for all about TOPPS CHROME CARDS

    Hello Everyone,

I was trying to get out of collecting and in doing so I had to buy some 1997-98 topps chrome boxes. (Obviously I failed at my attempt to stop spending money on cards.) I got two boxes of the chrome cards. One the cards looked as they should. FUll color new etc. The second box the cards were faded. THe color had definitely faded even in a sealed box and packs. I have seen the fading before but I thought it was because of the heat or sun.
Now I'm wondering if it is something different. Does anyone have any idea what would make these 97-98 chrome cards fade? I noticed the second box smelled of cigarette smoke. The first did not. Could the chemicals from the smoke do it? even while still packaged? or is it heat?

What is it?? I do not want to spend more money on the 97-98 chrome and get faded cards

    thanks

    Kevin

Smoke can discolor and fade cards for sure, though I cannot say with certainty that it can be done while they are packaged (hopefully someone with more knowledge here can establish this one way or the other).

Sunlight could be another factor. I once mistakenly left autographed cards out on my desk for months, exposing them to sunlight. They faded from thick blue to a thinner, almost black color.

All I know for sure is that we must keep our cards from any smoke or sunlight, even indirectly, to be completely safe that they won't get discolored or faded.

Are you certain that the packs were not opened and resealed? Did you pull anything nice out of that box? I mean if they are air tight then any outside element shouldn't effect the product inside. Other wise it might just have been a bad batch, it's really strange for that to happen.

Can you post pictures comparing them? I'd like to see what you are talking about before I throw a theory on why out there.
