Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a good scrap and I do believe that fighting still has a place in the NHL, but the antics of Gillies is cowardly, and I would go so far as to argue criminal. Unfortunately, these antics will continue until either a) the owners just refuse to employ these losers, b) the player unions recognize that they are actually attempting to seriously injury other members and refuse to represent them, or c) fans stop purchasing tickets, and watching these teams on TV.

I totally agree with the opposing coach in this case .... "If there's room for that in hockey, I'm not sure I want to coach anymore."

Ill never forget the time when the Pens and Isles had that all out brawl game back in 2011. This idiot hit Tangradi in the head into the boards and he was concussed instantly. What did this Goon do? He threw off his gloves and started punching him in the head and started another all out brawl including a goalie fight. It was one of the most despicable things I have ever seen. Too add insult to injury after he was escorted off the ice he stood there yelling at Tangradi like he is some kind of hard a** as Tangradi is being treated on the ice for a concussion.

Sorry for the rant burns me up every time I think about it

Want to know the crazy thing? He's actually a really nice guy in person (I won't pretend to be great friends with him, but know him from high school.... which goes back quite a ways. Have run into him a few times over the years, I've got nothing but nice things to say about the man. Seeing him in "real life" you'd never know he had issues like that on the ice).

I'm not, for a second, trying to condone what he just did (or has done in the past). IMO Players of his ilk should be run out of the league, except as long as you allow fighting there's little way to effectively do it. As long as there are coaches (and GMs, and owners) who value the fighter, they'll be employed. So long as teams can get away with sticking a guy in the lineup that plays 2 minutes a night, there will be fighters.

You can't ban the Gillies' of the world, as long as you allow fighting. It won't work. So long as fighting is tolerated in pro-hockey circles, the "goon" will continue to do what he does.


Want pro hockey where there are no players like Trevor Gilles? Then the moment a player drops his gloves, while you can still "let him fight", you kick him out of the game. If the other guy keeps his gloves on (doesn't fight back) then it's just one guy gone. After the 2nd fight of a season, start laying automatic suspensions. Do that, and there is no longer room for enforcers. Anything less than that (i.e. the status quo) and you're playing a game that encourages coaches (teams) to deploy players who use these tactics.

I fully believe you. Most players are very nice on and off the ice/field no matter what sport. Of course there are always some but yeah its nice to see someone who can say something nice about the guy.

I really like what you said there. I agree his job isn't to score goals or make high light reel plays. His job is to hit people, be the tough guy of the team, and fight. He does what he has to do to keep a job as a hockey player. He does go over the top multiple times unfortunately.

I think hockey needs tough guys someone who can fight. Each team needs someone like that. I respect guys like Gillies but I don't respect him when he pulls crap like that.

I think fighting needs to be a part of hockey and yes I do understand its a two way street. I personally enjoy fighting in hockey as it changes momentum sometimes and its a way of protecting you teammates. I refer to the Talbot Fight against the Flyers in the playoffs when it was 3-0 and Pens came back and won.
