Nurse Says She Will Not Comply With Ebola Quarantine

A nurse who was quarantined against her will in New Jersey after treating Ebola patients in West Africa will not obey officials' instructions to seclude herself at home in Maine, she and her lawyers said on the "Today" show and to the Bangor Daily News on Wednesday.

The nurse, Kaci Hickox, returned to Maine on Monday after New Jersey authorities released her from a hospital tent where state officials kept her over the weekend as part of a new quarantine policy. She hired a lawyer and spoke out about her isolation and was then transported to Maine.

Maine officials have said that they would ask Hickox to quarantine herself at home until the passage of 21 days from her last possible contact with an Ebola patient, adding that they would make it involuntary if she resisted.

"Today" show host Matt Lauer asked her if she planned to follow guidelines and finish that quarantine on November 10.

"I don't plan on sticking to the guidelines," she said. "I remain appalled by these home quarantine policies that have been forced upon me."

I am sorry, but when we are talking about a potential epidemic that could kill millions, this shouldn't be an option. If an AIDS victim knowingly has sex with someone else it is a criminal charge. If someone could potentially have ebola and they refuse to comply with quarantine requirements then they deserve the same treatment.

I heard a great joke about Ebola yesterday. You probably won't get it.

Ebola has been around for 30-40 years. If anything, they know how it is passed on. This nurse, also knows. It's not her fault the public is paranoid and government officials react the way they do because of it. Not the first time politicians bow to the public and ignore the science.

How is asking someone who has been exposed to the virus to submit to a 21 day quarantine, which science says is the incubation period for ebola, bowing to anything but science?

Are you going to site the left wing blog responsible for this rhetoric? Ebola is such a non-issue that they are now recommending that the soliders (forced to serve) in Ebola countries wil need to be quarantined for 21 days. At this point we should choose caution over your left wing blog. When you are at risk of spreading a pandemic (even if it is a minute risk) you should not have the option of opting out of quarantine.

If science was on top of this disease it would been cured in the past 30-40 years, right?

The CDC says quarantines are not needed for these health care workers. The CDC knows the science. Even if she contracts it, it is extremely hard for someone to pass it on. That's the science.

Again, the soldiers are being directed by the military (government). At this point we should choose common sense over your right wing fear-mongering.

If there was a demand for a cure (there isn't because up to this point it was just affecting poor black people) this would have been solved year's ago. Unfortunately, your drug companies (good ole American way) are only interested in developing drugs like Viagra and Lipitor (the money makers).

And I don't need a left wing blog for my rhetoric. Everything I have said is accurate.

canada has plenty of drug companies and so does the rest of the world, you would figure after 30-40 years africa would be inclined to find a cure, why sit around and wait for the u.s. to do it for you? and then complain about it?
