Pujols RC Values

Reading the new Beckett and to me, some values seem a little off, such as his regular Upper Deck RC issue hitting $100 when there are as many as 100,000 of them in the world, and some of his serial numbered RC's, such as his UD Evolution RC are valued less.

Same goes for his regular Bowman RC issue, which may also be numbered in the +high-high+ thousands. I'm sure much of this has to do with those issues being popular and in demand by the masses but if you put three cards on the tabel, his UD RC, his regular Bowman RC, and his UD Evolution RC, I'm taking the Evolution RC or any RC serial numbered to 2,500 or less.

Another eaxample is his Regular Upper Deck RC being the same value as his Topps Reserve RC issue. Both $100. Put those two cards on the table, and I'm taking the Topps Reserve RC.

Still, the demand for his cards is amazing. I just added his Topps Stars RC to my collection yesterday, from a pack and in great shape.

I think his regular Bowman RC issue is $100 and I think his Bowman Chrome Auto RC is like $3,200.00, which I'd never pay for a baseball card, no matter how good the guy is. With some of these very-very high end values people are paying, I think they may be in for a long term disappointment if they hold onto the cards.

Anyone remember how hot Jose Canseco, Ken Griffey Jr, and Frank Thomas were at one point in time? Now look at their cards.

I think his Topps Reserve has the best long term potential for a regular issue, non-Auto RC. It's serial numbered, it's limited, and it looks great. Plus it's Topps.

I think that rookie cards from manufacturer-name sets (Topps, Bowman, Upper Deck, Fleer) will tend to hold a higher value relative to their print run than higher-end sets simply because a certain fraction of collectors (myself included) will gravitate toward the rookie card of a player that is most "basic" when a) the rookie cards for that player are expensive, and/or b) the player has many rookie cards to choose from. Pujols represents perhaps an extreme example of this; there are plenty of other stars whose cards exhibit the same principle.

There's no way his most common RC's (Bowman, Upper Deck) will maintain that kind of value. He's freakin awesome but the prices being paid now for any 2001 Pujols card is crazy. There's just too many of them.

I agree with you 100%. I remember when I first started collecting Nolan Ryan cards his Rookie booked at $1500.00 now you can buy half a dozen for that amount if you look long enough. They may not be Mint or even Near Mint but they can be had for 1-2 hundred dollars.

Gu's are what gets me. I traded for a Nolan Ryan GU back when they were new, different and exciting thinking I had something special. Yeah right, at the time it booked for $300.00 and within 9 months it was down to $100.00 and is now $80.00. If I were to flat out buy a GU I would offer no more than 33% of BV due to the drop off in BV in just a matter of months. I have a few GU's I got in a trade and I can't even give them away it seems.

I am an avid Nolan Ryan collector and have found his oddball cards such as food issues, disks and older specialty cards tend to retain their value much better than his run of the mill cards. Actually that applies to most players. I just traded for a Nolan Ryan Fruit of the Loom card which looks exactly like a 93 Fleer card but because it has the Fruit of the Loom logo it books for 10 times the BV of the regular 93 Fleer. I assure you it will retain its BV while the $100.00 plus GU cards issued today will not book at nearly that much tomorrow.
