    2014-15 O-Pee-Chee Platinum Product Preview

Hobby boxes have one on-card rookie autograph, a die-cut insert and lot of parallels.
The 2014-15 O-Pee-Chee Platinum Hockey base set has 200 cards, keeping it much smaller than base O-Pee-Chee Hockey.
Whether it goes by Chrome, Prizm, or some other similar brand, shiny parallels have long been a staple of most every chromium set. Things are no different here. With the Refractor name connected so closely with Topps Chrome and Bowman Chrome, Upper Deck is going with the Rainbow name to describe Platinum's parallels. Basic Rainbows are inserted 1:3 packs. Other versions include Rainbow Trax (1:20), White Ice (#/199), Red Prism (#/135), Blue Cubes (#/65), Seismic Gold (#/50), Black Ice (#/25) and Golden Treasures (1/1). Collectors can also look for randomly inserted Photo Variations.
The Retro name is carrying over from base O-Pee-Chee. But rather than being a full parallel set, it covers half of the OPC Platinum base set including 30 rookies. Retro cards are inserted six per box. Parallels include Rainbow (1:20), Black (#/100), Red (1:160) and Autographed Rainbow (1:160).

    Estimated Release Date: 4/15
Product Configuration: 20 packs per box, 4 cards per pack
    Price Point: Mid-End Hockey Card
Target Audience: Chromies, Autograph Collectors, Die-Cut Card Collectors, Rookie Collectors

I don't like the rehash of the Platinum name. Anything associated with Pro Set should be avoided. They do LOOK pretty cool, though.

I hope the Photo Variations won't be too hard to notice.

Agreed! It's fine if they change something else on the card as well, in order to easily recognize the variation (like the different coloring for lettering as with the Playoff Beard variation), but if only the photo is changed, it is a PITA to keep track of over time. This is one of the few "innovations" I do *not* want to see spread to hockey.

Hard-signed autos of rookies will be nice to chase.

    Umm, wow... *drool*...

Now the only thing I need to know is price! Looking at the pre-release info, I'm thinking it will be close to SP Authentic - Guessing in the $100-120/box range?

Hold on a minute! Are these positive things I see being posted about Upper Deck??? J/k! I'm just glad they seem to have gotten the message that they need to offer something new (relatively speaking) and not rehashed product lines from years past.

I agree on the photo variations - Make them at least somewhat easy to spot! And since I'm thinking about it, I'll throw this out there as well: I think rainbow variants should have a different picture from the base card (this goes for all card manufacturers). Make them something special instead of the usual 2000/1000/500/100/50/25/10/5/1 copies of the same base card, just with different color's of shiny stuff.
