New Jersey Woman Stabbed to Death While Waiting For Firearms Permit

This is a sad story, but not surprising since she lives in New Jersey.

Carol Bowne had gotten a restraining order against her abusive ex-boyfriend and fearing for her life had followed the law and applied for a weapons permit April 21st. The state of NJ naturally took it's time in issuing the permit even though state law requires one be issued within 30 days. Now she doesn't need one. On the night of June the 3rd her former boyfriend caught her in the driveway of her home and brutally stabbed her to death. Just two days before her murder she had checked to see if her permit had been approved.

Is it undeniable that a gun would have saved her life? Certainly not. Is it undeniable that the state of New Jersey denied her a fighting chance? Absolutely.

New Jersey is one of the worst states for gun owners and Bowne’s murder is further evidence that not only do state laws need to be fixed and processes need to be more efficient, but also that better reciprocity laws are needed nationwide. Although New Jersey state criminal code requires applications be granted within 30 days, Bowne was unable to defend herself with the firearm she wanted, and needed, to carry.
