MJ Collection - Value and Direction Inquiry

Hi all,


I was a collector of MJ and basketball cards back in the '90s and I only have a small set of 72 Michael Jordan cards as shown below. I'm wondering what these cards are worth - they're not all that expensive or rare, but it would be neat to know how much they are now, as most of the other basketball cards I've ever owned are worth nearly a fraction of what they were in the past. I'm not looking for a rock solid figure and I see them selling on eBay for various actual, realized prices of what consumers are willing to pay. A rough figure would be most appreciated. The average Jordan cards seem to be the only ones that have kept most of its value and I see that many of them have increased in value.


Also, are there any cards here that stand out for its rarity? Again, I know that these are "common" Jordan cards, as that's what I could afford back when I was a kid - and they certainly don't show up in any top 10-20 lists in terms of rarity/value. But perhaps some cards became more attractive over the years due to regained popularity of a particular set or (re)discovered demand for desirable action shots.


And, should I sell all 72 cards so that I can acquire 1 rarer and autographed MJ card?

Design-wise, the only MJ card that seems to stand out to me (which I don't yet have) that I really like is a 1988-99 SP Authentic Michael Jordan #2 card (last image below), and that card isn't even worth that much... maybe if it was autographed and graded as a 10 by a reputable third party grader it would be a good card to own. Are there any other cards like the 88-89 card? Are there any all-star game free throw line dunk contest cards of MJ that are similar?

Now, I don't anticipate owning a MJ rookie card or anything extremely expensive like that, so that would be out of the question for me - and I wouldn't feel comfortable holding onto a card like that.

Welcome to the forum. Nice MJ collection. It's good that you've referred to Ebay, as the completed listings is your best guide to valuing cards these days.

I would say the most valuable cards there would be the Skybox Metals, but even then they are only worth around a couple of dollars unfortunately. FYI, the one where he's holding the flaming ball has a couple of parallel versions that are super rare and very high in value.

If you were to sell the entire lot, you may only get a few dollars for them which would be a small kick start to saving up for an MJ auto. I'd keep them so that if you get an MJ auto they would all look nice together.

I agree that the SP Authentic card has a good design. There are many others with some iconic photography too. MJ is probably the most collected player for obvious reasons so you'll find there are a heap of cards featuring him.

Probably considered one of the most desirable Jordan autos of all time. That one was the only one listed in auction format this year.

What if I got a BGS graded 10 MJ SP Authentic #2 card (below), and got it signed on the grading case (then covered the case with a frame)? I say that because I hear there's a program by UD that allows you to send certain items in to get signed by MJ but not trading cards. So, what if it's just the case with the card still inside?

Back to your question, if signed on the case it will be worth much much less than on card autos. I would suggest you get something unique signed rather than a graded case which Mj might not even sign

It doesn't say that he doesn't cards, but I read that in tandem with what people have been saying on forums.

Are you sure they are still running this program? Last I heard of such program was four years ago, now Kobe and Durant are no longer with Upper Deck which is not indicated on the website.
