"Buy Back" Autos
Hi,
I apologize if this has been brought up before, but:
Originally, the idea of "Buy Back" Autos was (I believe) that companies would take cards from previous year's products, have them signed by players, and then insert them as special bonuses into the current year's product.
However, I just realized that there are "Buy Back Autos" of 15/16 Upper Deck to be found in 15/16 Upper Deck. How did Upper Deck "buy back" product before the product was released? It's possible I'm just hanging onto the terminology too much, but unless I'm missing something, it seems like the spirit of the "buy back' has been lost.

You're going to have to provide some clarification on this one.
The checklist for the buyback autos in the 2015-16 UD Buyback product can be found here: http://opg.sportscardforum.com/scf/inv/viewset/191780
There are many 2014-15 products included there, but no buybacks from 2015-16 that I'm aware of.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

My mistake, I thought the Shayne Gostisbehere rookie was from 15/16 (he made his debut last season). Still, a "Buy back" auto from 1 year ago is a far cry from the original intent, when every player didn't have 25 auto cards per product their rookie year.

Ah, okay. I'm following.
I won't argue. I think the concept around buybacks are great, but I agree....... the 14-15 Rookie Class: Did you really need to use them? The Canvas autos they've done look really sharp, the YGs ? Meh. I get why people like them, but I don't personally see the big deal.
It's probably a lot easier for them to get autos from guys that debuted last season than it is guys that played in the 90s though. Content wise - I'm guessing people would be more excited to pull out a Leon Draisaitl than a Doug Weight (maybe not me personally, but what do I know? lol)

I'd think some more "iconic" cards would be cool. The Fedorov and Bure French RCs. Not the biggest name, but remember the craze over the 1991 UD Czech Paul Kariyas? I think that would be cool. The Forsberg and Selanne 91/92 RCs. Heck, a buy back of the Crosby/Ovechkin/Toews YGs would be cool. Maybe have Gretzky autograph some of the UD Heroes cards, or some of the early 90s artwork cards (i.e. Hull and Gretzky "Back to Back"). To me, going back a year or two is just kinda cheaping out.
Were I running UD, maybe I'd do a different "buy back" every year, doing an "anniversary" style, where you get buy backs of the product from 20-25 years ago every year.

I think some of those cards were in there. I saw a bunch of art style cards, but unlike the recent YGs they were 1/1s.
Doing a quick search... there were 17 cards from 1991-92. They were mostly RCs, All Star Cards, Checklists (which were art cards) other art, special stuff (white house visit, all rookie team, canada cup) and a couple of "star base".
1992-93, without going through it, I think is similar.
I don't believe they did any 1990-91 cards in this set, but they just did an entire run /25 of 1990-91 buybacks (inserted in Series 1/2 packs) last year. A Bure Auto'd RC was one of them (don't recall if Federov was or not?). Potvin was in there too.
The set last year: Ever single card was in as a buy-back, and numbered out of 25. Some cards (maybe 40 per series? Don't remember exactly) were signed.

History doesn't match up. Even 2002-03 BAP Signature Series contained buybacks from 2001-02.
