Upper Deck Woes?
Hello,
I was just searching through other forums and i came across a read that kept stating upperdeck was in serious financial trouble. I was huge into the hobby from 07 08 til around 12 13. I joined the service and only just recently got back into it. I was wondering can any of you shed any light on UD's situation?

Ud is a privately held company, so their financial details aren't available to the public. However, here's a brief rundown of what's been happened with UD
- sued by Konami for producing counterfeit cards outside of their agree contract
- death or Richard McWilliams (check the backs of your ud Gu and autos to see who endorses them, it's that guy)
-sued by their franchise in Europe(don't remember details, but I think it was and out wrong use of funds. Really don't remember)
- loss of football, baseball and basketball licenses
-sued by player unions for not paying for services rendered on time. Basically, whenever a player signs a card, they need to get paid. Those payments are late
- total rumour, but I heard issues with IRS
Hope that brings you up to speed. But basically, anyone who says ud is having financial troubles is just inferring because ares I first said, private company. The only people who really know how ud is doing is the big wigs at ud.
Cheers,
Reoddai

Man, the rumour mill on UD's financial situation has been running for years, yet they're still there. That doesn't mean that they're doing good, but one would think that they would have already capitulated if they were in that dire of a situation. They actually must be making an absolute mint off the McDavid hype!

So, what sports does UD have a license to produce? With UD apparently struggling, does that increase the likelihood of Topps and Panini getting back in the hockey card game?

I don't think you have to worry about going without hockey cards. If they go out of business, someone will get a license. It might take a season or two for the NHLPA to pull its head out of its behind and take less money, but eventually they will realize that a little is more than nothing.SHARKS and CAPITALS Fan +++ Tomas Hertl cards: 512 & counting Hidden Content ...... Well, just like Leaf, they can produce any number of unlicensed sports products as long as they don't use licensed material (ie. logos and player photos if they have an exclusive contract with a competitor like Gretzky and Orr). Off their website, they produce hockey, basketball, football, golf and Marvel non-sport cards. They only have licenses with the NHL and Marvel, however. All their other stuff is most likely unlicensed if the content on the cards is associated with the NFL, NBA or MLB. Golf I can't speak to, I know absolutely nothing about how that works.
