Differentiating regular and foil bae, young guns, etc

I'm sorry, but I just don't see it.
Is it really obvious in hand, because the pictures don't look any different.
Different numbering on the back?
Other than the alleged foil, is there any other way to determine foil vs. regular?

In hand you can definitely tell.

I know @RGM81 has some excellent examples of the foils. But that Domi is a perfect example.

But I get what you're saying, they can be a little tricky to spot at first glance just basing it off a scan. With real pictures, it's a l easier to differentiate the two.

The only one that I've really noticed that is tough to tell at all is Max Pacioretty. The black background on his base card made it difficult. That's the Silver Foil, and it's pretty indistinguishable from a standard base card.



Anything with a regular ice background you can tell right away.

The cards definitely live up to their Silver Foil namesake, but when there's nothing to "silverize" it's tough to tell.

I think, in the eBay and online age, Upper deck should have put some sort of an identification mark on the front. Something as simple as a gold UD logo (rather than a silver) would work.

I agree with this. Sometimes a subtle change would make it a lot more distinguishable :)
