Legends Reserve / Spot the Winner and Associated Companies
I came across an odd card the other day, in my never ending quest to own one of each Red Deer Rebels hockey card. It is a small tobacco sized card of Mathew Dumba. It cost be about $4 (including shipping) and came from the eBay seller "oak-vault". The front of the Legends Reserve card features a red and white tri-striped banner, a notation of the player and a notation of the card number (with a set totalling 102). On the back is some sort of a game (similar to the Parkhurst and OPC cards of the 1950s-1970s) and a notation that reads "SPOT THE WINNER and associated companies".
As far as I can tell, the Legends Reserve set is one of those 'made in the basement' sets. Looking into it further, I was able to piece together the 102 card checklist (see below). The cards show evidence of die cutting and tear away perforations. It is, to say the least, an eclectic selection of players. No Bobby Orr... Ken Dryden, Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin, Dominik Hasek, Terry Sawchuk, Maurice Richard... etc. Looks like there was a dozen or so rookies (mostly first round draft picks from the 2012 draft) sprinkled into the mix as well. Some interesting picks to say the least.
When trying to date this set, I came down to a pair of possible years. The first is 2011-12, but this would indicate that the person selecting the rookies for the set had amazing powers of prediction as most rookies selected went in the first round. The more likely year of production is 2012-13, and after the 2012 draft. The first sales hits come up around August 19 of 2012. Such an odd set. It looks as though there is a white paper and a tan paper version (the tan coming out first).
The only reason I looked into this set was that I looked for more Red Deer Rebels.
