Yes it can be profitable. But you have to work at it and know what you are doing. You aren't going to do it by busting wax but you can do it by flipping cards or by grading vintage and hot rookies that are ungraded but still in great shape. It isn't easy but it is doable.

Basics
Short answer.
Unless you have a good understanding of accounting, are capable of reading basic financial statements with an appreciation of the key ratios you do not stand a chance of making money, unless your idea of making money is working for a fraction of the minimum wage in your jurisdiction.
Conversely if you enjoy cards or a specific sport then long term, with a strategy of focusing on complete sets(including short prints if applicable) in your portfolio you will have an enjoyable pastime that will yield more than keeping the money in the bank.
Conversely, building such a portfolio does not mean that you will simultaneously build the skills to sell your portfolio down the road. You have to master the strategy of buying and selling.

You could collect consignments. I think you could do alright after you factor in the cost for coffee, Mountain Dew and Advil. Also account for the cream for the sores on your arse from sitting and listing cards all day,but I know a guy who can get me a deal lol.
