UD Signed Matthews to Exclusive?
Darren Rovell from ESPN tweeted yesterday afternoon "Upper Deck has signed Maple Leafs rookie sensation Auston Matthews to an exclusive autograph trading card deal"
Didn't see it anywhere else but Rovell usually tweets about things like this.

Well it will be nice if the kid gets a break given that the Toronto Sports Network (TSN) is already starting to beat him up. Even though he will likely be a decent player down the road, the rest of us are likely going to have to listen to why the Leafs should have picked Laine for the rest of our lives.

Not surprised at all. After seeing the whole UD and McDavid deal go down, the. Then Leaf signings Eichel, and further signing Nolan Patrick and Joe Velano to exclusives, it doesn't surprise me at all that UD would lock up Matthews.

Can you imagine if UD can't work out a deal and Patrick/Velano go #1 in 17/18? 2 years without the #1 draft pick having an autographed product in the only licensed product

The interesting part (to my knowledge anyway) is that Leaf hasn't said how long their exclusive contracts are for. They could be for 5 years, or they might expire leading up to their rookie seasons. Who knows?

They've only gone to the extent to say they're "multi-year" deals so you can bet that their first year of NHL eligibility will be covered by the Leaf deal.

The money in the card business is in the ink so it would seem that UD would want to go out of their way to lock down a potential money maker for them, and snatch it away from any all comers.
If they have deals like this in place with top athletes does this not shore up their existing exclusive for when it comes to renewal? BTW when does that happen?Searching for: Jagr, Palffy, Stumpel, and Boyd
