Stupid Question Time!
I warned my fellow pucknuts that a good number of my threads would be titled like this! Here's today's stupid question...
The 2005/06 Upper Deck Hockey Showcase cards come in 2 versions, the regular Upper Deck card, and the slightly different coloured Beckett Promo Version. My question is this. Are the regular Upper Deck cards actually serial numbered to /1000, or is there a third version? I've got what appears to be both versions in the Dany Heatley card for my PC, but neither is serial numbered. So, are they actually numbered, or was this an announced print run? If this is an announced print run, then shouldn't the checklist in the Inventory Manager be changed to remove the serial number attribute from the regular card?
Now, I realize that some of you might be like me, just smarta** enough to point out, I actually asked 3 stupid questions! Well, it's my thread, my title, so I can ask as many as I want!!
As always fellow collectors, any help/insight is greatly appreciated!Always looking for Senators cards! Must be a draft pick, or the card is identifiable as a Senators card before I want it!
As most of you know, I suffered a fairly severe stroke in April '25, so mail goes out anytime!

No worries, all questions are good questions in my opinion. I've had my fair share of questions about this hobby over the years, especially when I started to collect! There are so many good members on these forums. I think I speak for a lot of us when I say we'll try to help you out with questions as much as possible!
Anyways, back to you original question. From what I recall about those cards, I believe these had the two versions as you expected, but I don't think any were serial numbered or anything like that. The difference were the colour of the borders used on each card between the regular version & the promo version, but nothing else.
Some parallels don't always have any exact stated print runs or anything, so while we know one might be "rarer" than the other, we can't actually quantify by how much exactly. Sometimes it's just a rough estimate.Last edited by creasecollector; 01-16-2017 at 01:31 AM.

Thanks! I totally understand about the colouring of the cards to differentiate between them, but was confused by the checklist! I put in Dany Heatley and the card number HS26, and while both versions came up, one is purportedly numbered to 1000, which apparently isn't the case. Is it a simple fix to remove the serial numbered attribute from the database?
And I fully agree that there are no stupid questions. It's my tongue firmly uncheck way of saying I should already know the answer, but...Having been collecting for 20 years now, the blatantly obvious should be just that, but sometimes, I just miss it! Apparently, according to my ex wife, I also need never know when I'm being flirted with either!

Neither the regular nor the promo set was serial numbered. The Beckett Promo cards had a more bronze background than the non-promo cards.
The regular set had an announced "print run limited to 1000 copies each". The promo set did not have an announced print run, but Beckett stated, "there are significantly fewer copies of this version of the card." You are right SenatorCollector, the promo cards should not show up as "/1000" under the Print run column.
The promo cards are limited but the actual number is unknown. Not really a popular thing to do with limited cards b/c collectors want to know the actual print run b/c it defines the value and desirablity of a card. The reason why serial numbering is the norm these days vs. announced print runs (or unannounced print runs in this case) is to provide this important info.
Now for a story. ITG used to actually print the announced print run right on their cards. For example, "Emerald Version 1/100" meant, "one-hundred of each card inserted" into the entire print run. They were not serial numbered. Sometimes people would mistakenly think, "Hey, I have serial number one out of one hundred!" and list it on eBay as "#1/100".
But in the 2010-11, this practice of labeling the print runs on the cards came back to haunt them. ITG erroneously printed "Emerald Version 1/1" instead of "Emerald Version 1/340" on the entire Emerald sp version of the Masked Men III insert cards in the Between The Pipes set. Initially there were a lot of psyched collectors and an unusually large number of the same 1/1 cards listed on eBay.

On the upshot, that error did lead to one of the cooler redemption programs in my entire time collecting.
