Ranking the 2017 trade deadline winners and losers
The Capitals got the best player available at the deadline, while the Senators made some head-scratching moves. Here are the rest of winners and losers from deadline day.
Only one team is going to lift the Stanley Cup on a sultry night in June, so really there was only one winner and 29 losers at the trade deadline, well 30 if you include the Vegas Golden Knights. Actually, there were 31 losers, the last of which was the group of people who booked a vacation day to watch this exercise in ennui.
But, alas, the guy who hands out the assignments around here insists that we run a list of winners and losers from the trade deadline. So here goes, with any deals consummated within seven days of the deadline being considered.
NO. 1 WINNER – WASHINGTON CAPITALS

Im not even sure if Washington won. Who did they get? They do have the best record again this year but they got ousted last year by Pittsburgh in the 2nd round i believe. Maybe this year is they're year!! Im sure all of you holding sweet Ovechkin rookie cards are hoping so.. I had to go check but yeah, the Caps got Shattenkirk & Im not sure if they picked up anyone else. They added a Solid 2 way D-Man & that never hurts when your making a run for Lord Stanley. I think this is going to be they're year. Its about time the Cup comes to Washington!!

Used to write about the Maple Leafs is all you need to know about the author. Just about the only writer on the planet who would suggest that Vanek should have been brought back to Montreal.

Washington won, no doubt about it. The best team in the league acquired the best player rumoured to be available at the deadline. Shattenkirk is a 1B bluebliner and they were already loaded on the backend. If I were Pitt or NYR or whoever they ultimately face, I'd be very worried.

Ottawa was, at bare minimum, a break even deal. I'd actually say maybe a small loser. If Burrows can return to form of a couple seasons ago, they'll be fine in the short term, and I don't know much about Stalberg to have an opinion, but giving up on Lazar was a mistake! And Tommy Wingels back in December??? Has he done anything, cuz before yesterday, I didn't even know he was a Senator!
Always looking for Senators cards! Must be a draft pick, or the card is identifiable as a Senators card before I want it!
As most of you know, I suffered a fairly severe stroke in April '25, so mail goes out anytime!
