"I can't afford to buy wax because, as many have said in the past, it is a losing proposition. I would end up with 1/3 of my money back..."

I highlight this statement because this is part of the problem with the hobby. People are concerned with the fact that the return on investment is low. The "loss" they endure worries them. It should not matter if they "lose". That's not the point of collecting.

The other part of the problem is that the cost of buying boxes/cases is absurd. It has become a wealthy person's hobby.

All this has to change. Unfortunately it won't. Greed is ever-present and won't go away any time soon.

If I just collected nice cards of any team/player, buying wax would be great. But, what I meant by that statement was if I only collect Montreal, and I spend $150 on singles, all of my money would go to things I like/want. But if I spend $150 on a box, I end up with $50 worth of cards, and likely none that would fit the criteria of my collection. For my situation, this would be a silly way to go about things.

Edit:Also, if I had unlimited funds, I would buy wax all day long, not worried about the loss. But my hobby funds are limited, so I must approach it such a way that makes the most sense to me.

Amen! Let's keep the hobby about the fun and nothing else.

The only thing I disagree with is buying wax if I had unlimited funds. I wouldn't do that. It's fun opening cards, but I think I'd just buy the cards I need and do some travelling!

Given the choice, yes I'd take a trip to Europe over a couple cases of The Cup!
