That is terrible reporting by Yahoo
"According to the New York Post, New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning was involved in a scheme with the team’s equipment manager to sell fake gear that could be advertised as “game used” based on game-worn gear."

The New York Post did not report that Manning was involved in selling fake merchandise. The original Post article cites a claim made in court documents by plaintiffs in a lawsuit against Manning and others. There's a big difference between "he was involved" and and an unlitigated claim in a civil case.

And what is the basis dor the suit against against Manning? A vague statement in an e-mail Manning allegedly sent to the Giants' equipment manager.

“2 helmets that can pass as game used. That is it. Eli,” Manning wrote to equipment manager Joe Skiba from a BlackBerry on April 27, 2010, according to the documents.

The phrase "can pass" may mean exactly what it says. Helmets that can pass the test verifying they are game used. The burden of proof is on the plaintiff, not on Manning.

Thus far this is much ado about nothing!

"Eli Manning is well known for his integrity"

Is that the integrity of holding out and forcing a trade from the team that drafted you? Or the integrity of getting pissed off when your brother just won the Super Bowl? Eli is a dirtbag and will always be a dirtbag.

Not sure what this thread has to do with hockey unless perhaps he is related to Brandon?

The want list at this link features what I need of Gretzky, Roy, Ottawa Senators, and Miscellaneous sets. I also have a CFL want list on my page and if you have nothing from it I will consider other traders of current Ottawa Senators,Guy Lafleur, + trade bait.

Yeah this should be in the Football forum....

However it could also be good for a general sports talk, because you really never know if this happens in all sports either.

From how this looks, and if jsokol has the real story pointed out, and there's no real evidence against him, then all is well. However! If he was up to no good, and more tomfoolery shows up, then Sharky's "dirt bag" designation applies... I guess we will see.

Otherwise I'll stick to my CFL, and ignore the goings on in what my cousin so affectionately calls the "Nefarious Felons League"!

Where in the world do you come up with this stuff? "Getting pissed off", so because he wasn't jumping up and down, acting like a crazed fan your interpretation was that he was angry? Read the interview in which he was asked to explain his expression, his answer was honest and quite believable. So please don't pretend you have any idea what he was thinking other than the insight he offered.

Secondly, Eli never "held out". He made it very clear that he had no intentions to play in San Diego well before that year's draft. In fact he stated that if San Diego insisted upon drafting him he would attend law school, instead. That's a pretty good option few athletics can exercise. That hardly makes him a "dirtbag". Interestingly, Bo Jackson, John Elway and Eric Lindros, among, others also identified teams they would not play for if drafted by them.

Integrity doesn't even come into play in either situation you described. Except of course when you choose to sling around terms like "dirtbag" which raises a completely different integrity issue.

I think he is more thinking along the lines that if one player is doing it (a high profile one at that) then maybe a bunch of other players are doing it and in other sports. AKA the whole memorabilia industry is a scam thus all the game used cards are suspect as well.

Have you ever doubted that game used cards are suspect? Aside from the fake patches there has been lots of nonsense by card companies, Grading services, et al? In 2001 I pulled DiMaggio polyester Yankees jersey, advertised as game worn. Upon investigation, it was a jesrsey worn by Joe D as an honorary coach in an old timers game. Unethical, you tell me?

This is a little off topic but to touch on your point about Manning...athletes should have NO say in what team they will or won't play for before being drafted. Whoever drafts you, you should be obligated to play for that team.

Manning said he would attend law school if drafted by San Diego. That particular situation does show a lack of character and, yes, I call that a lack of integrity. Talk about threatening to take your ball and going home. Athletes shouldn't be allowed to make that threat. Geez...even if I was picked by the worst team ever, I would be very happy just to be drafted by a professional team. You must earn the right to have a say in where you go. Play out your rookie contract and then go elsewhere.

These players have a sense of entitlement right out of college these days and it should never be.
