Not sure where you are breaking. Check the becket link above for reputable breakers. Also, cardboardconnection has ads for all the good ones in the background.

Everyone pays for team in a pick your team, in a random you pay for spot and teams are randomized. After the breaker breaks cards are sent to the person that owned the team in that break.

You can also pick individual players in some cases.
I don't usually participate in breaks, but I did a month or so ago for just Rod Smith in a case of 16 Classics. Not expecting much, I hit an auto numbered to 6. And about 10 other commons.
For SEVEN BUCKS - SHIPPED!
Got em about 4 days later.
Now that's beginners luck. It's only the second break I ever went in on, but I chose a dealer with a good reputation, and felt for 7 bucks, I would be ok even if I had just hit the commons I wanted. I was actually hoping for some of the parallels, and busted on that, but getting the auto made up for it.
It's gambling, like opening a box.
But you can manage the odds better depending on the break you participate in. In a case of Classics, which has like a thousand cards in it, your odds are good of getting at least something. Maybe not an auto...
But from just a box of something like NT, or Flawless, even a team might not show up. Obviously, all 32 teams won't be in a box with only a dozen cards.
Breaks can let you manage the risk/reward factor a little bit, but you still need a little luck.
Homework, homework, homework. Spending money on cards today requires a lot of it.
