After 12 years as an ice hockey parent, I have thousands of pictures of my children skating, shooting, and celebrating. But my favorite is blurry and dark. I took it through the glass at Kettler Capitals Iceplex with a cellphone in 2008. In it, my then-7-year-old son Simon stands on the ice, holding his stick and wearing full gear. He is in a line of children and he is chatting. Holding his stick horizontally and bending all the way down to hear what Simon’s saying is Alex Ovechkin.
