New to the forum, new to collecting. Great story!!!
What's up fellas!! Been a sports fan all my life but within the last year I started watching case and box breaks for all sports, It really got me hooked and had me thinking about when I was gonna take the leap and buy a box myself. I always considered buying into a case but didn't want my first experience like that, also didn't wanna get nothing my first time. Well as the months go by and I am still being a watcher I decide to buy a box on Ebay, not sure if I wanted a NBA, MLB, OR NFL box being there my favorite sports. I sell on Ebay for a side hustle and get a lot of stuff from thrift stores, and while thinking about what box I am gonna get I decide to go to my local thrift store. This is where the great part happens, about ten steps into the store on a bookshelf I notice about 50 hobby boxes mainly being hockey, a couple 2015 upper deck football, a 2015 SP basketball and a few goodwin champions boxes. I start as quickly as I can loading up a cart with all of them and as I am doing that some guy walks up and says WOW!! you hit the jackpot. He was a fellow hustler and was asking if he could have a few to make some bucks but was also telling me its all good if I didn't want to. I gave him a random box and told him im gonna buy the rest. Forgot to mention the price of each box, 5 BUCKS!!! yup five dollars each. 300$$ dollars later and about 45-50 hobby boxes later I am on my way home. So I sell some on ebay, make my money back after a week or so and decide to enjoy myself. I did open some boxes immediately, but they were low end product and I didn't even wanna list them, some usa football boxes and a couple minor league hockey boxes to get my thrill. Back to the enjoyment, I sold the basketball box :( so I decided to open the 2 2015 upper deck football boxes. First auto was a David Johnson Northern Iowa card, into a penny sleeve and top loader it goes. Nothing much after that. Next night, few beers down and I pull out the goodwin champions boxes, First hit is a redemption card for a hand painted adventures in wonderland painted booklet. Next hit is my favorite so far even though its value is 10$, a Jerry West memorabilia card, put it in a magnet case lol. Few more beers later open another goodwin box, first hit was a van exel auto, next a hand painted 1 of 1 masterpiece card. Next goodwin, nothing special. I like hockey but I wouldn't consider myself a true fan I guess, so I take a break from opening cause I wanna sell my hockey boxes to buy MLB and NBA boxes and hockey is all I have left. Things are slow so I go on a rampage and start opening boxes and really get nothing big. I tell my self last 2, so I had listed on Ebay a lot of 2 upper deck 2015-16 NHL portfolios for 90$$ after fees and shipping I was gonna make 60-70 so I end the listing and open them up. First box was ok, but the second was a crazy hit. A auto rookie redemption card for the #1 rookie the next season. Yup auston matthews. I know this was long sorry about that but though it was a cool way to officially get my collection started.
