5 things to know about the Michigan Wolverines hockey team

New coaches, new players and a new Big Ten conference foe were among the biggest topics at Michigan hockey media day at Yost Ice Arena this afternoon. Detroit Free Press sports writer George Sipple looks at five things to watch as U-M hockey moves into a new era after the retirement of coach Red Berenson.

    1. New head coach Mel Pearson: An assistant under Berenson from 1998 to 2011, Pearson took on a big challenge when he returned to his alma mater, Michigan Tech, and turned that program around. Now he’s tasked with replacing a legend and proving that he was the right choice for one of the coveted jobs in college hockey. Pearson has assembled a rock star coaching staff of former U-M players. He retained Brian Wiseman and volunteer assistant Steve Shields, then hired Bill Muckalt, his former assistant at Michigan Tech.
