My 17-18 MVP experience
Two years ago in 15-16, I was walking through Walmart one day when I stumbled across some new UD Series 1. I hadn't been to my LCS lately, so I figured what the heck, and took a shot at a single $20 blaster box. To my amazement, I got a Connor McDavid Young Guns in my very first box! I couldn't believe it, and I remember thinking to myself that I should quit while I was ahead and not buy another box. Of course, I am an idiot, so I kept going back for more, thinking of all those Connor McDavid cards I would soon horde. Well, six or seven blasters and 13 Hobby boxes later (yes, I kept track of the hobby boxes), I finally hit another McDavid card -- a single crappy base UD Portaits card (never did get another YG). It was the last 15-16 box I bought. To this day, I curse myself for not listening to that little voice inside my head.

Fast forward to a couple weeks ago. I was in my LCS and bored (a bad combination). So I got the crowbar out and bought a box of the new 17-18 MVP that had just recently been released. I don't mind wasting money on a box or two of garbage as long as I stop and don't waste too much. I enjoy opening packs and looking at the cards as much as anyone. And who knows, maybe I will get lucky and find a base or Silver Script of my PC, Tomas Hertl, so then I wont have to pay $4 to get a 10 cent card mailed to me. (I did not know at the time that Hertl is not in the base MVP set, so the only Hertl MVP card made this year is a Bright Futures card I can only get on epack.)
So I finally got around to opening the box today. In the very first pack, I ripped open an Alex Wennberg Super Script (#19/25)!
That never happens to me. Well, I decided right then and there that I would finally listen to that little voice in my head. Knowing that I have a better chance of winning the lottery than in getting another decent card out of that box, I closed the lid and put it away. I will give out the rest of the packs to kids on Halloween, and I am done with MVP for this year. I already got the Hertl BF in a trade on eapck without buying any, and I will quit MVP after opening my one single pack. Quitting while I am ahead...

Yea, the same thing happened to me... I stopped collecting 20 years ago, but a couple of months back I saw an UD series 1 blister box and was like "what the heck why not" so I bought it for 20 bucks, the "jumbo" card I pulled in that very first box? Auston Matthews Young Gun, and I also pulled a Nylander Young Gun out of that very first box too.... Well, I ended up buying at least 15 boxes of UD series 1 and on that 15th box I finally got the Auston Matthews ..... IMO, it isn't too bad considering I ended up spending like $250 on all the boxes and I ended up with all the key cards and the Matthews alone books for like $250... So I think ultimately I made out ahead - I got the Jumbo Matthews, the regular YG Matthews, the Nylander/Matthews CL, Nylander YG, Tkachuk YG and about 50 other YG's, + all the canvas's and portraits..... So out of a $250 investment I ended up with $500 in cards......

I think we've all been there with that little voice inside our heads at Walmart. Those blasters are sooo tempting sometimes. I have yet to hit anything to write home about. Nice story!
And the kids should love the cards on Halloween. Great idea!Jhonas Enroth Card Collector & Host of the Hidden Content
