Small question about getting cards graded

Ok, so I am finally going to get a bunch of cards graded. Thing is I have never done so, what is the best way of going about it? And why not send them in top loaders? I am sending in 30-40 cards at once, hopefully they come back good. I think getting insurance would be good for this since the BV of the cards is probably around 3,000, but I am nervous about sending them away for what could happen to them. Silly I know, but nonetheless............
