Another one bites the dust … I was having a friendly debate regarding Jameis Winston's stats, and low and behold, Clay Travis of Fox Sports and that "Republicans Buy Shoes Too" best-selling book, who is a known Jameis-hater, jumped into the debate … poor fella … I completely overwhelmed him with stats and facts and he quickly ran away and blocked me … but the debate is now part of good ole Twitter's public record and a whole lot of Bucs fans got a massive kick out of it … fun times.

CONGRATULATIONS to JAMEIS WINSTON … he became the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ALL-TIME leader in TD passes today and moved up to 2nd all-time in passing yards … he also moved up to 3rd all-time in passing TDs by the age of 25 and needs just 5 more to pass Peyton Manning for 2nd all-time.

As for the game … he played great, just as he did the last 2 games ...

Jameis Winston had the highest QBR of any of the top 7 QBs in QBR today & is now all alone in 3rd place in the entire NFL in QBR behind ONLY the top 2 MVP candidates (Drew Brees & Patrick Mahomes)!

And yes, I LOVED that he lit into starting center & Tampa's resident "bad azz" Ryan Jensen for killing a drive with a penalty … THAT is leadership and I loved it! Jameis may always say positive things about his coaches and teammates in his press conferences, but during a game, he is as fiery as they come and is all about playing to win and doesn't mind going after anyone if he feels the need to do so … I love(d) that about Jordan, Kobe, Kevin Garnett, Charles Oakley, Tony Allen, Tom Brady, Tim Tebow, Steve McNair, etc., … and now Jameis!

Winston has been doing good since he got the starting job back 3 weeks ago. Just one turn over with the hail Mary at the end of the game because Mike Evans tripped. He has looked like a new Jameis I am sure they are going to give him a new contract.

I'll agree with you on the prior two games, but not so much yesterday.

Bucs didn't score any points in the 2nd half and he was 18/38 for just 213 yards for the game.

I skimmed through most of your posts, and must say, the stats you've presented are very compelling. There are many angles you can take when analyzing a quarterback. It seems to be 2 angles that always come up in discussion: the stats-based approach, and the bottom line approach. For the stats based approach, it is always QB ratings, game splits and averages, TD's/INT's, regular season MVP's/All-Pros/pro bowl votes. Your argument supporting Jameis Winston on the premise of the stats-based approach is very eye-opening since I've never even considered Winston among one of the game's top QB's currently.

At the end of the day, the stats-based QB can only go so far in terms of the 'Mt. Rushmore of QBs'. If Jameis Winston continues on his trajectory, he will enter uncharted territory: A QB with all of the statistical records and a sub-.500 winning percentage. That's not to say that he won't turn that around; but just like his winning percentage can turn around, so too can his statistical performances (for the worst). And just remember: through 51 starts, Brady had a .731 winning percentage, and was on his way to his third lombardi; Rodgers had a .596 winning percentage and 1 lombardi. Jameis still has a lot to prove before having his name mentioned with guys like that, and it starts with the bottom line: winning football games.

Honestly, I don't think Jameis' agent wants Jameis to sign an extension with the Bucs at this point … I do think Tampa will give him the $20.9mil 5th year option, but I imagine his agent (Super Agent Joel Segal) would like to see Jameis hit the free agent market in 2020 when the new collective bargaining agreement will come into play, as he could really break the bank at that time … however, at the same time, I think Jameis loves the Bucs owners and his teammates and he personally may be willing to sign a long-term extension, so it will be interesting to see what happens over the next 13 months.

Yesterday was an ugly game for both the Bucs and Saints' entire teams, neither team had over 300 total yards of offense and I think the weather playeda large part. As for Jameis though, he bested Brees in QBR for the game and actually bested ALL the other QBs in the top 7 this week … had his kicker made the two under 50 yard FG's, the Bucs would have had a 20-3 in the 3rd quarter and had they not also had a punt blocked, they likely would have won the game 23-21. However, no, Jameis certainly didn't have a great game … but he did best Brees and do enough that barring atrocious special teams play, the team would likely have won the game.

Thank you for the kind words, I appreciate them. Many sports fans just take the media's biased narratives as Gospel truth, so it's always nice to know that there are still sports fans out there who appreciate statistical research and that will allow the data to inform their opinions.

I agree with you for the most part. To me, Dan Marino belongs on the Mount Rushmore of QBs, but most would not put him there as he never won a ring and it's very possible that Winston could have a Marino-esque career rather than a Terry Bradshaw-esque career, especially if he stays in Tampa as they are one of the worst run franchises in the NFL and always have been for the most part.

However, while the Bucs win % as a team with Jameis is certainly nothing to rave about, the fact is that Jameis has a far better win % than many HOF QB's had at both the same age and stage of their careers. Below is a quick copy and paste from a tweet I posted on my Twitter feed (@jameis1of1) a while back:
    --------------------------------------------------------------------

Through 3rd season Jameis Winston was 18-27

    Dan Fouts was 5-20-1
    Steve Young was 5-17
    Fran Tarkenton was 8-27-2
Bob Griese (the QB who had a perfect season) was 10-20-2
    Troy Aikman was 14-24
    Warren Moon was 12-33

Jameis has a better win % than ALL of those HOF'ers

    --------------------------------

So, the above said … I agree that if Jameis never wins a ring, he'll likely never be considered a "Mount Rushmore" QB with Otto Graham, Tom Brady, Joe Montana and Peyton Manning, but I do believe his career stats will be more than enough to get him into the Hall of Fame and if he happens to win just one ring, he could at least be in the Brees, Favre, Rodgers, Young class, which would be A-OK with me as well :-)

In all honesty, I don't think it's ever sensible to predict a young QB will win even one single ring … stats can be projected but rings can't … Otto Graham's and Tom Brady's careers were basically a fairy tales as even QBs with otherworldly talent and stats, like Rodgers, Favre, Peyton, etc., won 0-2 rings over their careers. I mean, three of the greatest pure passers the game has ever seen: Dan Fouts, Dan Marino and Warren Moon combined to win ZERO rings in 50+ years in the NFL, so to me, if any QB wins a single ring, they can consider themselves "blessed" but they are expected to perform on a certain statistical level suitable to their talent-level.

To me, honestly, team wins mean next to nothing in assessing individual talent or on-field excellence, so while I "hope" Jameis can win a ring someday, I'm not expecting him or any other young QB to do so, as football is the "ultimate team game" and is the furthest thing from a sport like boxing or tennis where superstars play 1-on-1.

Thought I would pop back in and see how things are going. I know that I am not as well versed as you are in stats and am hoping that you can answer a question for me. How does one of the worse completion percentages of the week (47.4%) among QBs equate to the best QBR?

Just hoping you can help explain your claim of the best QBR of the week. I didn't check to see that he had the best QBR. Just taking your word for it. Thanks
