If Americans recall anything at all about President William McKinley from history lessons in school, maybe it’s that he led the nation into war with Spain over Cuban independence and, in the process, gobbled up Puerto Rico, the Philippines and Guam. Or that he was assassinated in 1901 by a shooter forever described as “a deranged anarchist.” Vice President Theodore Roosevelt took his place.
