jbl- I subscribe to the Beckett On-Line Guide. It's not cheap, but I use it constantly.
Always Looking for:
A) Graded Vintage (Pre-1980) (BGS, BVG, PSA, SGC) in all sports
B) Graded True RC's (No inserts or parallels) (BGS, PSA, SGC) in all sports
C) Certified Auto and GU cards of players from the 70's and further back in all sports

I personally believe value lies somewhere in between Beckett and ebay. Everyone likes to point to ebay as a buyer because it is very buyer friendly. Auctions except in extreme cases will always reflect more of the bottom floor of a card's value. Potential buyers get to point to that sale as their value of the card. However in reality, if you are in the market for a card, how often is there an auction immediately taking place for you to compete with the rest of the world for the exact card for which you are looking? Just because someone bought a card on ebay last month as a result of an auction shouldn't mean that price is the value of all future purchases of the card when someone is listing it for sale.
Listed prices on ebay reflect that. If you are looking for a card, well here it is at a price, most of the time you can make a different offer, and if there aren't 100 other of the same card available then well here is your supply meeting demand. If there is only one person selling the card you want, even if an identical card sold 3 times last month at a certain price, the seller can say, well this is the only one available at this time. If it is worth it to you, you can have it. If it's not, then obviously you will walk. Most people know the market of a card is never the same as full Beckett price. However, I also don't believe it is the bottom ebay price either. This is especially true of the rare cards. How do you put value on something that there are only another 4 or 9 copies of? You can get these for steals when the product first comes out as people try to unload these rare cards of players they have no interest in. A year from now, you won't see as many listed.
In the end, the card is worth whatever anyone is willing to pay for it...
