Kim Davis’s grandmother was different from everyone on campus, and that didn’t stop her from becoming the first African American woman to earn a PhD at Harvard. Kim Davis’ mother was different, and that didn’t stop her from becoming a working professional in a time when so many doors were closed to black women in America.
