Barbara Bush, the snowy-haired first lady whose plainspoken manner and utter lack of pretense made her more popular at times than her husband, President George H.W. Bush, died Tuesday aged 92.

Her death, which came two days after she fell seriously ill and refused medical treatment, was announced in a statement from the office of former President George H.W. Bush.

'A former first lady of the United States of America and relentless proponent of family literacy, Barbara Pierce Bush passed away Tuesday, April 17, 2018, at the age of 92,' it read.

Bush was the wife of the 41st president, George H.W. Bush, and mother of the 43rd, George W. Bush.
