The 2000 expansion draft compared to the 2017 expansion draft
With the Vegas Golden Knights playing for the Stanley Cup there has been a lot of talk how they had an advantage in the draft compared to the last expansion draft. It got me thinking about the last expansion draft and how much of a difference there really was between the two drafts.
Rules and who got drafted and any trades made;

Who was left unprotected;

As you can see some teams left some good players unprotected, which makes you think why they weren't drafted.
I think the biggest difference between the two, SALARY CAP. There was no cap at the time of the last expansion.
Thoughts?

Im reading the unprotected list and there are some really good names
McSorley, Gilmour, Fuhr, Coffey, Fedtov, Andreychuk, Carbonneau, Murphy, Tocchet, Clark, Those are some really good names that can help build a stanley cup winning team. But with Vegas GM George McPhee deserves a lot of credit for what he did at the expansion draft most of the pieces that built this team was via trade they got Tuch for taking Haula they got Marchessault for taking Smith they got a 2nd round pick to take MAF they got 1st rd 2nd rd draft picks and Karlsson to take David Clarkson's 5M$ contract Karlsson turned into a 43 goal scorer. They have a great team with no real superstars just a lot of really good players that want to prove they can win a cup.
