Five Years After His First Autographs Hit the Market, Max Muncy is Making His Mark

It’s been more than five years since Dodgers slugger Max Muncy’s first autographed trading cards arrived in Panini America’s 2012 Elite Extra Edition Baseball. Clearly, a lot has changed since then. Back in late January of 2013, Muncy was a relatively unknown prospect from the Baylor Bears who cut his teeth at Keller High School in North Texas. Today, he’s torquing taters at an alarming rate. Through Tuesday, Muncy was tied for fourth in the National League with 20 home runs — all of which have come since he was called up on April 17.
As a result, Muncy’s few autographed trading cards — all from Panini America’s 2012 Elite Extra Edition Baseball and 2013 Prizm Perennial Draft Picks Baseball™releases — are currently exhibiting every bit as much pop as the player on them. On April 18, just one day after Muncy was called up, one of his 2013 Prizm Perennial Draft Picks Baseball autograph cards sold for . . . $1.01. Two days ago, a copy of that card sold for $58. One of Muncy’s Red Ink autograph variations from 2012 Elite Extra Edition Baseball limited to just 25 copies changed hands for $13.99 in late May. By mid June, that card was selling for as much as $102.50.
Such rapid ascensions underscore, yet again, the value of patience when dealing with prospects such as Muncy, who was drafted by Cleveland in 2009™(in the 41st round, no less), opted for college, was drafted by Oakland in 2012, played just 96 games (with five home runs) during parts of 2015 and 2016, was released, signed with Los Angeles and spent 2017 in the minors. Now, he’s writing one of the biggest stories of the baseball season that just might get even bigger if Muncy delivers in next week’s Home Run Derby.
    Stay tuned.
