ollectors often get caught in up staying with the new and hot products that drop on a weekly basis, and in doing so, forget what still awaits them in unopened packs, boxes, sets, and cases of previous releases.
The sheer number of new products being released regularly along with the amount of cards available from past issues is astronomical. This can make it easy for even the most astute collectors to forget about some products here and there. Before you know it, amazing sets on sitting on shelves in hobby shops or other retail locations across the country for months, even years, after their initial release.
This is where we come in. Cardboard Castaways is designed to re-inform collectors of past releases that are worth revisiting for a variety of reasons.
Today, we take a look back at…
2008 Topps Updates & Highlights
Reason Selected: We selected the 2008 Topps Updates & Highlights Baseball Mega Rack Packs due to the fact that many of the game’s premier talents have rookie cards in this product. These rookie cards aren’t signed and they don’t have memorabilia swatches inside the cards. They are simply base rookie cards of a few of baseball’s best.™ Plain Topps rookie cards have caught fire in recent years with many collectors getting turned off by “hit” rookie cards, or those featuring autos and relics, because of the prices they can sometimes sell for on the secondary market, making them difficult for many collectors to acquire.

Configuration: 80 cards per pack.
Highlights: This complete set offering is a one-stop shop to get the high number extension to complete the 2013 Topps Heritage set while also loading up on many rookie cards of today’s top young stars.
Some of the stars that have rookie cards in this set include:

  • Clayton Kershaw
  • Max Scherzer
  • Evan Longoria
  • Matt Joyce
  • Chris Davis
  • Jay Bruce
  • and more!

While you could also pull All Star Stitches cards featuring uniform relic swatches from the 2008 All Star Game, including jumbo and regular-size swatches and sometimes autographs, the real treasure in this set is the Kershaw and Scherzer rookie cards.
While neither card has reached the status of the 2011 Mike Trout Topps Updates & Highlights base rookie that sells for $300+ ungraded, be advised that adding these to your collection sooner rather than later is in your best interest.
