Is scotch tape a bad choice to tape a toploader?
Hi folks.
This might be a stupid question, but is scotch tape a bad choice to tape a toploader? To me, this is the most ridiculous theory I have ever heard.
Someone called Bean's Ballcard Blog posted a photo on twitter stating NEVER use scotch tape. The picture showed a damaged card which was apparently caused by taping the toploader with scotch tape.
I commented that I have been taping with scotch tape for 20 years and I have yet to receive a complaint that the card got damaged from the use of scotch tape. One response to my comment was:
"Theory: you’re a idiot Everyone knows not to use scotch tape" (great grammar and punctuation there, junior!)
I have seen a few collectors send me cards in toploaders that were taped with painter's tape, but I honestly thought the reason behind that was that it left less adhesive and marks on the toploader.
Can anyone confirm that the use of scotch tape causes damage to cards? To me, if you hold the toploader closed before taping and keep it firmly closed as you tape, the card cannot get damaged because it cannot move.
If anyone can verify conclusively that scotch tape causes damage to cards, please do so.
Tony

Yup scotch is fine. Painter's tape makes the toploader more re-usable. Sounds like cocaine is a hell of a drug for that guy haha

Considering the card companies themselves (UD and Panini) have sent me redemptions/replacement cards with the toploaders scotch taped, I'd say it's fine as long as proper care is taken to ensure the card is fully in the top loader before taping.

I've used scotch tape for a few years and i've never had anyone tell me the card was damaged because of it. I have finally switched to painters tape simply because i found it at a cheap price.

Is there any way to do a screenshot of the tweet thread to show everyone? I can do one but I'm not sure I can do it in one shot

I don't love it when scotch tape is used, as it means you typically have to used a different toploader. This is true especially since the top loader will be sticky one you remove the tape. Then the the toploaders tend to stick to one another. Its not a big deal, I would just prefer a seller to use the blue/green painters tape if they have it.

I hate handling my cards and prefer to keep my cards secure. This is why I use scotch tape. I typically only use enough scotch tape to cover a small area of the toploader, but never enough that obscures the view of the card. Example:

If I receive a card that has an over-taped toploader, I carefully remove the soft sleeve from the loader and place it in a clean one. No big deal for me. Plus, I have a different use for toploaders that have tape residue. I reuse them as they are great for sending hidden cash (I put it between two common cards, tape them together, place it in a toploader and tape that. Then I put it in a team bag and place it in a bubble mailer. I then send it with tracked shipping to ensure the person gets it).

I prefer painter tape, but I won't be mad if someone uses scotch tape. His toploader will go in my "To use again for shipping" pile.
