Opinions on team box breaks?

I’m just getting back into collecting and something I noticed that is popular is box and case breaks where you buy the rights to a certain team. Since I mostly collect only Rangers this sounds pretty great and I made a bid for one on eBay. I don’t generally buy boxes of higher end stuff so it seems like a good deal. The buyer gets the stuff for the team they like and the seller gets to probably make a decent amount on the case.

Are these looked upon positively in the community though? I understand it’s a risk where you might get nothing, but I could also spend $120 and get nothing I want to keep and maybe not even make half my money back selling on eBay. Are there things I’m not thinking about? Obviously I wouldn’t buy from places that don’t do this often so they hopefully won’t rip you off.

Any opinions are appreciated.

These are called Group Breaks. They are great for collectors who want in on the action when it comes to expensive products like The Cup, for example.

I would encourage you to look for reputable Group Breakers instead of using eBay, personally. I've heard of some sketcky eBay sellers selling "spots" for group breaks and keeping the cards. I would look towards GB's on CnC or something like that, where you can watch the breaks live online and see the hits being pulled yourself. They are also super professional at what they do.

For a team collector like yourself, it creates a good opportunity to potentially obtain a wide variety of cards of your favourite team once you pay the "buy in" price for that specific team in the group break. Some are more pricey than others though, and it depends on which product is being opened, or if they are opening multiple products within that specific box or case break.

But like with a lot of gambles, you may end up with nothing or a numbered base card as your lone "hit". So it's a toss up, really. You might come out very much on top, or you might get absolutely crushed. I've seen both occur many, many times.

Besides what Group Breaks have done to the hobby and the card values at large (another topic all together), I don't mind group breaks if it gets collectors some sweet cards. I went through my own group breaking phase a couple of years ago. I didn't do too bad, and I ended up with some sweet cards. I don't think I ever kept any of them, but it was a fun & nerve-wracking experience for sure, haha.

At the end of the day though, I prefer to spend my hobby dollars on single cards for my collection. There is no guessing or hoping involved. I know the card I'm getting, and I'm paying the price I am comfortable paying.

Thanks for the input. I did look at their feedback and they had many people saying they got their stuff and watched a few of their YouTube group break videos before bidding and atleast with eBay there is some protection if things go bad. But I guess that doesn’t matter to get my $50 back if they pulled some 1 of 1 Lundqvist card that I’d never get for $50 or something. Do you have any recommendations for good reputable places for breaks?

Oh and do they usually send base cards or is it just hits?

Usually just the hits for most breakers. Too expensive / time consuming to sort base. Unless it’s a premium / one pack product. Those base get sent usually.

For my own two cents, I wouldn't necessarily get into single/2-box breaks. It's cheaper, yes, but the chances of actually get anything goes down considerably. I've found pretty decent luck with case breaks. I'd never touch a mix break, personally, either.

As for base cards, if you ask for them, many breakers will send you a team set, which isn't that hard to sort out pretty quickly. Plus, it's just that much less base they have to figure out what to do with later.

Some reputable dealers that I've personally dealt with are CloutsNChara and Breakaway Sports Cards. You can find both of their sites online with a quick google search. They both generally do at least 1 product a day, usually more, especially on "opening day" for new products.

They’re fun. On our trade nights at Players Choice there is almost always 2-3 case breaks and they are a great time for everybody involved. Sometimes you get skunked but when you get a big hit it’s a nice feeling.

Yeah I watched one that was posted on eBay for Artifacts and they put the unsold teams on there for no reserve, Rangers went for $16 and they pulled a Messier #/5 auto patch. It’s like man I got that for $16 I’d be going nuts. Saw another one for The Cup and a guy for 4 Detroit hits for like $20 everyone paying big for the chance at McDavid

@SportsCardCollective does breaks on here. www.topnotchtouch.com is one of my favorites because of his personality while breaking combined with a solid group of people who watch live and have fun discussions. On ebay you see 450 sports and imperial garden most days. I also have a few facebook groups I'm in who do case/mixer breaks

Both are solid breakers.
