Not surprising. I don't know how true it is but I've heard that Lee had been suffering from dementia in his final years. Supposedly he would have episodes where he didn't know where or even sometimes who he was and would have to be reminded by his assistants. I remember at Wondercon Anaheim 2010 I asked him to sign a Ultra Fleer blowup trading card of Magneto and surprisingly signed his name twice in different inks. When I got it back I figured he was in such a rush he wasn't paying attention. Looking back I wonder if he had dementia bad enough already that he literally couldn't remember that he just signed the card and signed it again. It would have been very easy to steal from him over the last decade with the big boom of the MCU and all the appearances, interviews, and signings he was doing.
It's very sad to think anyone would be as two-faced to someone as nice as Stan Lee. He was always so down-to-earth in his interviews. He never gave the "big-me/little-you" attitude that many with his notoriety have, and just talked about how lucky he was to "be just a hack writer who created a handful of characters that people have come to cherish". I understand he had falling out with Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko where they felt Stan (and mainly Marvel's editors at the time) wasn't giving them enough credit for co-creating the characters they developed together. For me personally he was just as nice in real life as he was in front of the camera. I went to several events from 2008-2017 where I met him multiple times and had him sign different items. There was an event he signed 3 items I had even though the condition of his appearance that day said he would only sign 1 item. He stayed later for events past cut off times to make sure he could meet and sign with as many people as he could. He was just so gracious.
Personally I think that anyone who steals from elderly people in poor physical or mental health under the guise of assistance whether it be employed or voluntarily are some of the lowest forms of slime, even if said elderly are as well off as Stan Lee.
