Nicklas Backstrom YG recent sales are outrageous!

    August 20th PSA 9 - $20
    September 1st BGS 9.5 - $32
    September 10th PSA 10 - $99
    September 15th BGS 9.5 - $59
    October 11th BGS 9.5 - $65
    November 4th PSA 10 - $184 !?!?

Wow! That PSA 10. Just a fluke, or should I sell mine? (acquired a few years ago).

    Currently available on feeBay:
    DACW PSA 10 - $170
    BGS 9.5 - $107
    PSA 9 - $81
    BGS 9.5 - $62
    PSA 9 - $48

PSA population shows 39 PSA 9's and 56 PSA 10's
BGS population shows 115 BGS 9.5's and one BGS 10

Seems to me, collectors prefer the PSA 10 to the BGS 9.5. Thoughts?

Just few days ago I was thinking of sending in a few of my better pack pulled YG's for grading thinking that getting a BGS 9.5 would help for resale value. Now I am wondering if PSA might be a better option if the chances of getting a 10 are fairly decent. It seems like BGS 9.5 are more common and therefor less valuable these days? BGS 10 would be like winning a small lottery though, so there is that side of it.
I have a Pastrnak YG incoming and if it looks really good I am leaning towards trying PSA in hopes of a 10.
As for Backstrom, he is slowly getting his due, and has a decent chance at winning a 2nd cup.

I'd be careful with assuming that less means more in this case.

Most collectors in my experience prefer BGS for modern cards while entrusting PSA for older issues. Following this, there should be way more BGS graded cards of Backstrom's YG as opposed to those graded by PSA.

    Just my thoughts.

Rookies in basketball, football, and baseball have been spiking BIG TIME recently. The hockey market is a bit lacking in this department but if the same forces set their sites on hockey these prices will look like chump change in the coming years.

PSA 10 does sell higher than BGS 9.5.

I would compare True Gem + ( 9.5 / 9.5 / 9.5 9.5 or higher ) is more in line of what PSA 10 sells for. As much as people like the BGS sub grades, they dont like seeing a 9.0 on their 9.5.

    I would rank the grades:

    - BGS 10
    - PSA 10 / BGS 9.5 (true gem+)
    - BGS 9.5 (with one 9 sub)
    - PSA 9
    - BGS 9

As for graded cards, I always find it very the fact that ( for BGS and others)) there's a difference between Mint, Gem Mint and Pristine. For me Mint means a perfect card, Gem mint and Pristine: what could be the difference between the 2 levels? Gem mint must means absolutely perfect so... what is Pristine!!!!!. I'm almost surprised that grading companies did not find a higher grade than Pristine ( like celestial) As far as I a concerned, it's simply a marketing tool and, sadly,
many people are caught in it. (at a high cost)

There is a higher level for BGS, the BGS 10 Black Labels.

BGS can have these "tiers" because they provide sub grades

    - BGS 10 Black Label = 4 x 10s
    - BGS 10 Pristine = 3x 10s, 1x 9.5
    - BGS 9.5 True Gem plus = all subs 9.5, with 1 or 2 being 10
    - BGS 9.5 True Gem = all subs 9.5
    - BGS 9.5 Gem Mint = 3x 9.5s, 1x 9.0

While BGS doesnt break down the 3 different 9.5 grades .... the different levels of 9.5 do command different premiums on the secondary market
