Breaking up sets
Hi folks, looking for some advice.
I pulled out a whole bunch of hockey cards that I collected from 1990-1995. I know that most of these cards were mass produced and are not worth all that much, but there are some good rookie cards in these sets (Hasek, Jagr, brodeur, etc).
I bought a beckett hockey price guide last month and i noticed that although every individual card has a price many of the sets have no have price values.
A lot of these cards are taking up space and i’m leaning toward breaking up all these sets (none of them factory sealed) throwing out all the common cards (worth less than a dollar) and keeping the other ones separately in sleeves.
is this a good idea? Tell me what I should do.
ps: I have a small handful of baseball cards too. Is there a free online price guide someone can lead me to? I don’t want to spend 40 bucks on another price guide for a small amount of cards.
thanks

Obviously, there's no resale value in those cards. It's near impossible to even give them away for free. So it comes down to personal preference and/or personal space. I'm a set builder myself, so my choice would always be to hang on to the set if it's complete. If it's incomplete and you have no desire to complete it or you just don't have the space to hang onto a bunch of base cards, then you're best to keep the players/teams you like and perhaps the hall-of-famers and scrap the rest.

Keep the sets for insurance purposes and burn your house down. Put the insurance money to better use. Problem solved :)

I would just take the cards and throw them in your basement and forget about them for another 20 years - see what the world is like at that time - never know there might be some way for those cards to bring you some enjoyment at that time

I was always leading toward breaking the sets (keeping the good and throwing away the commons)
When I look at the price guide it seems like the individual cards are more valued than the sets. Some sets don't even have prices associated with them.
