Topps Hockey 2020

I saw this on the Topps Twitter (@ Topps) yesterday and I just knew I had to post this up here. Brett Hull signed these stickers for them at the All-Star NHL Fan Fair booth Topps had set up.

Could Topps be preparing for a reprint sticker release? That would be beyond awesome.

For those who may not be aware, Topps currently hold the NHL sticker licence.

Some basketball player had an unlicensed (Topps doesn't have a basketball license) Topps Chrome autograph card he was signing tons of on Instragram last year. Sadly absolutely nothing came out of it so hopefully that doesn't happen here as well.

Under their sticker licence with the NHL I'm not sure how much product they can bring into the market each year (might just be the 1 standalone product), but I do hope this inspire them to release a Topps Hockey sticker reprint set or something with the occassional autograph. That would be so cool.

I'm not holding my breath on that, but we can dream.

Hopefully if they do do Autographs the stickers get a thicker backing material so they can be treated more like cards by collectors.

The Brett Hull rookie reprint autographs look like the stock is thicker than stickers that I'm used to seeing but if they find a loophole and get around the licensing issue with this all hell is going to break loose in not just hockey but all sports.

I'm not sure of the standard Topps sticker size/thickness, as I only have the Panini stickers in my own collection, but they could be thicker for sure.

And it's not a loophole per say, as they are well within their right to produce stickers with NHL logos on them since they are licenced by the NHL to do that, but I see what you're saying as the sticker does mimic a card.

I love how much discussion these Hull stickers have garnered and I do hope Topps can get back in the hockey card game at some point. Topps holds their NHL sticker licence for the next 5 years I beleive, so it will be interesting to see if/what they come up with in the future. I'd welcome any new ideas to push those boundaries, plus it could make their push for a card licence in a few years more grounded. But at the end of the day this all comes down to the NHLPA on whether they want to include multiple companies in on the card licence and, of course, the money.

I'm not going to hold my breath on it, but it would be a really cool release to see if Topps decided to go that route and do Topps hockey cards reprinted on stickers.

I wonder if the contract with UD or Topps has anything that defines what a "sticker" is. If not, then they could produce it on normal card stock and just add adhesive on the back and boom, "sticker". Would be a fascinating loophole that could spread across all sports, with a bidding war for those sports without a sticker license.
