how many hours did it take you to type that savard....lol

I guess the question i should have asked from the beginning is that if i need 20 base cards to complete my set, should it really matter to the person on the other end what 20 base cards he gives up? Should i or the person on the other end really care if i'm asking for first liners that are averaging 20+ goals per season and I'm giving up base card players who will probably never get to 20 goals per season..

It all depends on who you're dealing with but in most cases if you just post what you're looking for when it comes to base cards, somebody will just give them to you for the cost of shipping. Doesn't really matter who the players are.

Eh, it didn't take too long. I just like to elaborate as much as I can and give as much info as possible. And since you're getting back into the hobby there are a few things you should know considering the hobby has changed so much (at least for me) after being away for 20 years.

As far as trading base cards..... It really depends on the user/seller/dealer...... Some collectors will just give them to you for free if you pay the postage. I mean they may need a couple of cards too but if you don't have what they need they will just give you the base cards....Of course other collectors "penny pinch" and will add up the value of the base cards and want that value in return - but generally if you need 20 base cards and they're not SP's you should have absolutely no problem finding them for free or next to nothing at all (depending on the base cards you need).... I mean I don't think many collectors care much about their 19-20 Upper Deck Duncan Keith, Tavares, Holtby, Seguin, Jamie Benn or the "stars" or "semi-stars" not even listed in Beckett, however they may want something in return for some of the superstars, SP's and especially SP superstars like Mattews, McDavid, Crosby, Ovechkin, Kane etc.. Because some of those SP base cards go for between $3 and $7 a card depending on the set and the player.....But even then it depends on the collector/seller/dealer... Because some collectors break cases at a time - so they have 20+ of every base card, plenty of SP's and they generally break the cases to get the major "hits" in the set - they're looking for cards that book for $50+ and the top rookies in the set (which are all SP's) generally when it comes to Upper Deck products.

Also it depends on the set - I mean if you're working on an SPGU set, the "true base cards" are the rarest - no one is going to give you SPGU base cards, that would certainly require a major trade...

If I were you, just list the cards you need to finish your set, and if they're not superstar base cards someone nice will just send them to you for free - or at least give you the non-superstars for free but may want something in return for a megastar like McDavid who generally books around 3-4 bucks.

Also, you can always go on ebay and there are a ton of sellers out there that have deals like "pick any 10 base cards for .99 cents" and charge .99 cent to $1.99 in shipping and they will usually combine shipping if you buy multiple lots.....

So yea, post the cards you need to complete your set, and if I have them I will send them to you for free if you pay the postage... I mean I don't know what set you're working on, however this year I have been buying a lot of 19-20 UD MVP, tho I have bought a couple blasters of the regular 19-20 UD - but I have been having more fun with the MVP, that and Parkhurst... So if you're working on the regular Upper Deck base set, I'm sure I will at least have a few.....

Also, to answer your question on why you keep opening material and getting the same cards - it's because Upper Deck generally issues certain card sequences to different regions to make sure you can't just buy 3-4 blasters and make a set or 2..... But card companies have been doing that forever... That's why I will buy a couple of blasters from the LCS or Walmart and also pickup a few "fat packs" as well, then buy a few more blasters or even a hobby or retail box off of ebay... That way I know I'm not only getting one region... Because buying boxes from one store or card shop is like putting all your eggs in one basket....

I figured that out back in 2016 when I kept on pulling the same cards over and over again out of 2016-17 Upper Deck series 1...... But I was lucky because for some reason my region was an Auston Matthews Young Gun hot zone.. As a matter of fact that's how and why I got back into collecting again.. I was at Meijer (its like Walmart) and I was walking past the card section, and on a whim decided to buy a blaster box and a few "fat packs" for "old times sake" and just to have a little fun... Well, I got a "Jumbo" Matthews YG in my first blaster box - at the time I had absolutely no idea what it was worth, I knew who he was but figured it was probably worthless. When I opened the packs I pulled a few Shining Stars, Portraits and Canvas cards along with a few Young Guns - one of them being the Nylander, and I think I pulled a Brayden Point as well - and I thought the Shining Stars and Portraits were worth the real money (because they were inserts after all) and back in the 90's when I was collecting the inserts were the cards that were worth the most.... Anyway I moved onto the fat packs, and BINGO I pulled my first Auston Matthews YG's along with a couple of others and of course more Shining Stars, Portraits and Canvas cards....So after I had my fun, I tossed the cards on my bookshelf - and that was that - however a week later I figured I would look on ebay to see how much I got "ripped off" after blowing 30 bucks on cards, and figured maybe I could make my money back - so I looked up the Shooting Stars and Portraits first, obviously they were worthless, same with the base cards like Crosby, Kane etc - they were all selling for .99 cents, lol.... Then I looked up the Young Guns, and my jaw literally dropped when I realized the Matthews was selling for $150.00 to $175.00 regularly, and the "Jumbo" was selling for $40-$50 regularly, and the Nylander was selling for like $30,00..... Man, after that I got hooked and have been collecting like a mad man ever since...

But I tell that story not only because it's interesting and how I got back into collecting, but because that's how I figured out that Upper Deck regionally issuing cards.... Because out of that one Blaster Box and 3-4 "Fat Packs" - I tended to get a lot of the same cards... (I'm from Chicago) and a I got a lot of Hawks - not only that but I got (4) Brent Seabrook Shining Stars - I got 3 Blue's and 1 regular, and the odds of that are absolutely impossible... The odds of finding a Shining Star are like 1 in 8 packs, and I believe the odds of finding a defenseman Shining Star in that series were like 1 in 24 packs - and the odds of finding a Blue Shining Star (which is essentially a parallel to the regular Shining Stars) were like 1 in 50 packs (and even higher for the defenseman) so how did I end up getting 3 Blue Seabrook Shining Stars and 1 regular Shining Star given the odds? well at the time I thought that was odd (no pun intended) however after hitting the Matthews YG twice, I decided to go back to Meijer to buy more - this time I bought like 4 Blaster boxes, a Tin and like 7-8 "Fat Packs" (basically the rest they had) and once again I got a lot of the same cards, and again I pulled ANOTHER Matthews YG, and quite a few Brayden Point YG's (at the time Point wasn't worth much) I just thought it was bizarre that I kept on pulling the same cards over and over including the Young Guns, I also pulled a "Jumbo" Nylander as well as a bunch of Young Guns in general - there was really no variety... I mean I think I pulled around 20-25 young guns and I only got like 7 or 8 different players, so I got doubles of a lot of them.

However I kept on doing the same thing over the months and years and it seemed like all the boxes were very similar - not identical - I mean I did get new cards I needed out of every box BUT I still got an abnormal amount of the same cards, and it didn't matter which UD product I was buying .... Except for Parkhurst, but even then the boxes were still kinda similar I was pulling a lot of the same cards, but the variety was better - and as usual I pulled a bunch of Matthews, several of his Green regular base, a couple of the Red Parallels and I also pulled a Black, I mean I still have quite a few of the Greens (regular version) that I pulled back then to this very day...

At any rate I remembered an article I had read many years ago about how card companies would issue their products regionally because they wanted to make sets as difficult to make as possible so collectors continued to buy their product to finally finish their sets - to finally find the cards that have alluded them..... To give you an example: here in Chicago I might get 3 Patrick Kane's in one box, while a collector in Colorado may buy a few boxes and not get one Kane at all.... So the card companies kinda correlate their boxes by regions just so it's harder to finish your set.... And that's why there are DP's (double prints) and SP's (short prints) of some cards... I mean not every card - even commons - have the same print run... They may produce 20,000 of one card and 7,000 of another card.....

My point is that's why many collectors will buy several boxes and still be missing a few cards... Because some collector across the country may have 5-6 of the card you need to finish your set and you may have 5-6 of the card they need to finish their set....

I know it kinda sounds goofy or like a "card conspiracy" - but it's true..... I'm sure you google it you will have no problem finding articles about card distribution tactics, and why it's difficult to pull certain cards in your area.

So that's why collectors are usually missing cards from a set that only has 200 cards but have bought enough boxes that they have thousands and many duplicates....

That's why when I buy I usually will buy a couple of Blasters boxes also grab a handful of "fat packs" - then go online and grab a hobby or retail box to boot - so I'm getting material from different regions...

Tho I will say where I'm at in Chicago, and where I buy my boxes and "fat packs" I get a lot of "hits" - because for some reason the boxes and packs in this region are loaded..... Rarely do I get a dull pack, I usually get my money out of it... I could buy 5 "fat packs" get one or two hits and I got my money out of it.... For example about a month ago I bought 4 or 5 Upper Deck MVP "fat packs" I think I paid like 15-20 bucks for the packs; but I pulled a lot of great cards.... I got my money out of it right away in my first pack when I pulled - one of the best cards in the set, if not thee best card in the set - The Gold Script Quinn Hughes SP (I wish it was #'ed, like the Gold Scripts in the past, but oh well I'm still happy) - not only that but I pulled a Crosby Silver Script, a Connor Hart Silver Script, a Cale Makar SP base...

Point being - don't put all your eggs in on basket.

I used to open a very small amount of wax, and when I did I liked to complete the base sets just for fun. Any time I had to pick up a few base singles it really didn't matter who the player was, they were all the same price.
