@Texasguy
Welcome back and let me pass on some knowledge, or at least my 2 cents on the grading issue. I collect Dallas Cowboys PSA graded, I have over 800 and as you can see from my signature line. I used to send in submissions, but I found since I am scattered about the cards I collect, it is easier for me to let someone else do most of the grading. Let me explain my thought process:
Ok. Since, I collect Cowboys (all Cowboys) it is cheaper for me to buy graded material on ebay or other sites than sending in cards. 1. I know what grade I'm getting so it takes the guess work out. If I send in a card and expect a 10, but get an 8 I'm disappointed, but still spent $10. So, for me, if I can get a Cowboy card graded 10 for under $10, I consider it a win! I consider the cost to me to grade it and then the cost of the card and is the grade acceptable to my collection.
Flip side. Since I collect Cowboy cards, I also have some unique stuff. Example 1991 Pinnacle Dallas Cowboy Team Set, 1993 Topps Stadium Club Super Team Dallas Cowboys Team Set Division Winners, 2010 Topps Chrome Sean Lee Rookie Rainbow (All Topps chrome cards/refractors of each color). In these cases, I am the ONLY PSA 10's (and sometimes the only PSA graded card) and it is unlikely that someone else is going to send in the player/card(s) I need, so I will have to find a card I believe will grade a 10, send it in and hope I get the 10.
Here are some examples:

Here is the Set I call Graded Cowboys with No Home. You can see how many PSA 10's are included and their population counts. Many are the current only 10. But who is really looking for Drew Henson these days at $10 a card to get it graded?

You can see in this set, I have the ONLY graded cards in many cases. Including grades of 5 and 6 that I did not expect. At $10 a card, that was a hefty bill. To top it off. I am missing the Charles Haley card. LOL So I bought the cards, sent them in and still have to send in more to get a set as a PSA 10 set.

Here is the Sean Lee Rainbow. More people were interested in grading rookie cards of Sean Lee so you can see there are more graded. The law of supply and demand takes over for the most part. This still cost me a pretty penny and I got some lower grades than I expected.

Here is my Emmitt Smith Master Set. I only need 2300+ more cards [to reach the different Emmitt's graded not all Emmitts] or about $25,000 in grading fees to finish, if I had all the cards and didn't care about the grade. So obviously in this case, I buy them on the secondary market under the cost of what it would cost me to get them graded. PSA will discount grading fees for large lots, by large I'm talking like 10,000 cards sent in.
PSA and Beckett are really the only grading companies. Everyone else is considered a distant second in my opinion. And as far as they go, I picked one back in the day and stuck with it. Since I picked PSA, I have stayed with them. Personal Preference. I do buy graded cards from Beckett and others with the intention of doing crossover grading to PSA cases eventually, so I do have non PSA graded cards. In this issue, the price has to be right as in the card must really look good and I consider the $10 it's going to cost me to cross over.
If you ever want to see my graded collection, or see what the PSA Set registry has for Houston Stuff, discuss grades, grading or other questions about grading, please hit me up. I love graded cards and have a stack on my desk to send in for grading at the moment. To quickly get off topic. They are some rookie cards that are worth grading immediately. Brady, Rodgers, etc... If you get high grades on vintage cards and or future HOF rookies you can make a profit, but don't be surprised about what you think is a 10 and what isn't.
I could explain how I grade my cards but I'll save that for a whole different discussion!!!!
