Do you have a pic? Sounds like a box bottom, but I could be wrong.

not a box bottom, some 80's OPC sets, including 1986 have blank back variations.....COMC would be the best place to see examples since you can vew front and back of card. Box bottoms have text on the back, and a different photo on the front

It does bear mention that these blank backs were not intentional. It wasn't until 2008-09 when Upper Deck introduced the Blank Backs as an Easter Egg parallel. Some years they've been easier to find than others--print runs can vary anywhere from 5 to 15 depending on the year.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

Not a box bottom. Likely a printing mistake, or a test of the fronts (that wasn't meant for release).
I picked up a Ranford from 87-88 last year, first time I'd ever heard of one. I assume these were discovered in the last yrar or two, and are being sold off.

I picked up a Liut 86-87 blank back from an online card store for about $5 US. They are not common, but I don't think they are totally rare. Many other years of OPC/Topps have them as well.

They didn't, at least not intentionally
This sound right to me (not common, but not as rare as we might think).
They started doing blank back parallels in 2008-09. Want to guess why? Pretty sure they got the idea from the fact that these things had existed for years.
My understanding is that these are the result of the printing process (a test). The run off sheets to make sure things are good. The sheets should be destroyed, but that didn't always happen. Some of them get out, and someone (eventually) cuts them up.

I have heard that the blank backs were test issues AND that they were cut from complete sheets back in the day. I haven't heard about anyone getting one in a pack.
