19-20 upper deck base variation cards
Is there any way you can figure out whether or not you have a normal or a variant base card without looking it up on the internet?

Nope. You just have to know.....
Which, see my post about Easter Eggs in another thread, would drive me nuts if I was buying this stuff:
There's an unannounced insert (photo variants) that's actually pretty tough to pull (i.e. people are going to want these cards) and nothing about the card indicates you have one. No doubt there's people that have these, and have no idea.
If all you have to figure it out are the cards, and your eyes.... the only thing you can do is break five+ boxes, so you've got enough for two+ complete base sets. Sort all the cards, and then look for differences. If you've got two cards that look different, you've got one. Chances are you're not going to hit the same SP twice.

are these variants only found in hobby boxes, or can you find them in retail too.

Not sure, I would assume Hobby only? Wouldn't be shocked if they're in Retail though.
They are super rare pulls though. About 1:1000 packs as per Cardboard Connection's S2 Checklist.

I believe you can actually tell if you have a variant card by comparing the picture on the front of the card with the picture of the player on the back. If they're different, it's a variant.

I was told by a local collector who opened multiple cases that the photo variant replaced the hit in the pack, so if you have a pack without any inserts, YG, jerseys, etc it is in there in the spot the hit is normally found,
