I think we need a few rules or I am certain this will be closed down by the mods.

1. No names, especially if it’s a trade or sale that didn’t work out on SCF
2. Please keep it civil
3. try not to be too judge mental. We all have felt we where wrongEd in our own eyes but if we stepped back might see a different picture.
4. Any thing I’m forgetting?
5. Mods if this has been done before or experience shows this is a bad idea for a thread please feel free to delete it now and can I please get just a warning before being booted out the door.

My very recent story as short as I can tell it

Very politely asked a eBay seller if he would be willing to accept any lower offers. Explained all price guides I found value the card at “X” amount which currently is half what he was asking. I figured I would meet him in the middle and offered “X” plus 50%. He goes on a long tirade and next thing I know he raised the price even higher.

I get business is business. I’m not into cards to feed my family. For me it’s 100% a hobby and for fun. I’m far more often a buyer than a seller. As a buyer or seller, part of the excitement and certainly the expectations are the wheeling and dealing. Part of his tirade was he “is sick and tired of collectors trying to negotiate”. Well geeze I thought that was a big part of buying and selling cards. Any one else have experiences like this? I ask often if a seller will accept “X” amount and my expectations are it never hurts to ask. Tonight, I think I truly hurt him... You can tell it to me straight. Am I being a whiny baby?

So here ya go, what frustrations do you have with the card industry that you want to get off your chest. I know I have more I could add

The seller should state that price is firm if that's their intent, otherwise open to negotiate. I'm sure the seller doesn't always pay "list price" on their purchases.

I haven't bough any cards on Ebay for a long time, but most of the time sellers would listen to an offer. I have heard more and more stories like yours though. I guess some people are just jerks. Hopefully it isn't a super rare card that you need and you can find another one down the road. Good luck and I would move on from that seller. This is a fun hobby, but some people make it not so much fun.

Unless they say it is firm, you should be able to ask for a negotiate price. To many on FeeBay (EBay) are jerks! That is why I wish we could sale more on SCF!

Yeah bakes, wish it were that way. I've sold some cards on here. everyone has been a pleasure to deal with.

Well fortunately these type of sellers don’t make up the whole. For every one of these I have found tons more who have worked with me to an extent. Today I was able to negotiate with a different seller and got him down from $250 to $150. Still high but it was a 1/1 from a 2004 Donruss set and will complete every Singletary card from that years set.

First thing is you can't use a value you found in a price guide to make an offer. I sell a decent amount of stuff on eBay and there are a lot of cards that sell higher than what Beckett lists them at. Just the other day I sold a Mike Trout card that Beckett lists with a high value of $6.00 for $30.00 on eBay.

If you want to use a better gauge for cards values you need to look at completed sold auctions to find the true value of something.

Any chance you could tell us the card you made an offer on and what he was asking for it?
