MNT Grading
I know people have brought up alternative grading companies ad nauseam. Up to now it's been Beckett, PSA or nothing. Since the major boom has started over the past few months I have noticed cards in MNT slabs are bringing a much larger premium over raw than I have seen in the past. Have Canadians finally become tired of shipping cards accross the border and back and embraced MNT? Is this sustainable, or is it simpli because Beckett and PSA are longer than normal?

I think (and hope) that MNT becomes like the Canadian BGS and MNT can increase in popularity. I think they have been doing a great job marketing and promoting their services during the graded boom we are currently living in within this hobby of ours, and I am glad they are getting the respect they deserve. MNT was always looked at weird when they came into the hobby, but now I've seen people send in some quality cards to them and give them a go, which is great.
The MNT slabs look great, the grading standards are tough I've heard, so they deserve to play with the big guys. While I'm not sure if they will join BGS/PSA at the top of the ladder, it's a great alternative that provides a solid service.
I think it is sustainable barring any quality downfall and/or scandals. The pandemic defintely gave MNT the new spotlight on their business they needed to compete, in my opinion.Last edited by creasecollector; 01-31-2021 at 02:17 PM.

I think its just all high grade slabbed cards getting big premiums. Even mid tier Gretzky rookies not graded by PSA or BGS are selling high.
Until the Americans embrace it as a legit grading company, I dont think they can compete with PSA and BGS. They literally only have part of the Hockey market .... if you dont have Basketball / Football / Baseball its gonna be tough to get any footing in the grading business IMO.

@creasecollector
I have never actually sent anything out for grading. I got prices on MNT's site, based on turnaround times. I assume I'm responsible for shipping both ways and insurance if I choose to do this, correct?

You also have KSA which has always been great for those in the Hockey market in Canada. Just saying there are other alternatives out there. I am not sure I checked their premiums of late but they always been liked by those North of the Border imo.

I think you already hit the nail on the head. They're small compared to Beckett or PSA, so there's a lot of people out there that would say "who?" if you had a card graded by MNT.
You're not going to get the bump in value that you do from the other two, at least not right now. Maybe over time it will become more equal in value, but I really have no idea if that will be true.
I'm not much into grading myself, but late last year I submitted a card for the first time (have no plans to do so again, at least not anytime soon). It was a Roy OPC Rookie Card - And I used MNT via a group submission. The cost & turnaround time was very reasonable, and the slab looks good.

Some collectors are using MNT for grading cards in there PC. They have no intentions of selling them at this time. the benefit is a Graded and Protected Card. The Bonus is if MNT booms in the future which i hope it does they will be ahead of the game. I am going to do the same for the new cards. The vintage will remain raw and chip away with PSA.
Others are submitting for the turnaround time. Why wait months when you can have it back in a couple of weeks. Price is right. Canadian Company. Canadian Dollars.

Seems like they don't give 10's. It's good to be tough, but if a card is perfect, it's perfect

The MNT holder looks pretty close to the Beckett holder to me. Glad to see some more competition in the graded market though.
